I am quite interested in this lens, as I am current using tubes on my 70-200 for my macros. Can someone please show me how close I can get with the 100L alone? I really like the 70-200 but I have to manual focus, would be nice to have the IS and AF of the 100L

You can place your subjects at a minimum of about 6inches from the end of the lens. As for having to manual focus, I don't see that as a big deal since most macro shots are usually manually focused to better control the very shallow DOF that is usually associated.

So would I still need to manual focus with the 100L on macro shots?

You don't have to but if you want to focus at an ax act point it might be best to manual focus to make sure it is exactly wher you want it.

This.
And usually there are multiple potential focus points in a macro shot that make the camera's AF system very unpredictable. For example, I just posted up a couple of pics of a knife/water droplets...in each shot there were at least 2-3 droplets within a single focus point on the camera's screen.

And water drops like to trick the cameras af because it is transparent so sometimes it will focus on the surface the drop is on instead of the drop it's self, mandbthatncan get annoying if you just want the drop in focus.

I'm finding that taking macro photos with a full frame is a bit different than using a cropped sensor. The magnification on the 50D was greater than the MD3. This was taken with a MD3 at F11.

This was taken at f22

I would appreciate any tips for taking macro photos with a full frame sensor vs a crop sensor.

So far, I like what I see.
Just wondering, when using extension rings what about the three AF-reach settings...do they stil apply, or are they unusable?

I've been considering this lens for a long time. I'm really torn on what my next lens upgrade should be- as a broke college student, lens additions/upgrades are few and far between so I really have to make the right choice. Right now I'm torn between picking up a new 17-55ish standard zoom to replace my crappy kit lens, or to pick up the 100mm macro.
After picking up the 70-200L, I basically keep it on camera all the time and rarely shoot with my kit lens. Occasionally I'll put it on, but then quickly become dissatisfied with the IQ and sharpness, and pu the 70-200 back on. So I really want to pick up either the Tamron 17-55 or Sigma 17-55 (Canon is out of price range). A lot of times I feel like the lack of a decent standard zoom keeps me from even getting my camera out at all because I know 70 isn't wide enough but that my kit won't provide satisfactory results.
On the other hand, I want a 100mm macro because it's in the same price range, would open up the ability to take macro shots, and I've heard it also makes a great portrait lens. I'm not too terribly interested in macro photography- I'd like to explore it and have the option to do it, but right now I'm much more interest in improving my portraits and landscape shots.

If that is pretty much your case, then upgrade your kit lens. I used to have the tamron, but I dont feel that its any better than my kit lens in my opinion because I would rather take IS than a faster aperture anyday. And because you dont seem to be interested in macro, then dont bother with the 100L because you can use your 70-200 for portrait.

How about the 17-40L? It could replace your kit lens and its an awesome lens for landscapes plus its cheaper then the 100L!

Thanks! They are alive. The local botanical garden just opened up a temporary butterfly exhibit. The spectacular green one is a green banded peacock swallowtail. I would guess that there was probably 6 inches of space or thereabouts between them and the end of my lens.
Amazing shots. i love the colors.

Thanks! I really really love this lens... by far my sharpest. As for the aperture, it's different for all. If you click on the picture it brings you to the photo on flickr and all the exif data can be viewed there. I was really close, probably about 6 inches or so from the butterflies.

I just got mine yesterday. So far I have to admit that I am having L-orgasms with this lens, it is incredible how sharp the pictures are, and the bokeeh....., and its only been one day.
Two questions for those of you who have this lens:
1) If you decide to put a UV filter on it to protect the from element, what filter do you recommend that wont affect the image too much?
2) Do you ever use a polarizer filter with this lens taking macro pictures? if so, When?. I do have a B+W Kaesemann Circular Polarizer for my 17-55 and I am very happy with it, but I am not sure if I will eventually need one on 67mm.
I am sure it will not be my last L.

1) I use a Hoya UV filter on mine. Doesn't affect image quality at all. Hoya makes nice filters.
2) I don't think you will, unless you take pictures of things that have annoying reflections. I know there are other uses, but that's the only use I can think of for this lens in particular.
It definately won't be your last L ;)

CPL occasionally when needed, never a UV. It's hard enough to get good macro images without adding another X factor. I keep the hood on except when I need to get really close. If I'm not using the hood because I expect to be doing mostly macro, then the cap is on when I'm not actually shooting. That's really all the protection needed.

How? How did you catch this moment ??? :-( :-)
Where do you focus? How to do it? I had tried it manytimes but without any success...
There's a lot of chasing around and patience on your part. Be patient and you can manage Bee-in-Flight shots like these as well:

Julian summed it up perfectly. Patience,Patience, patience. I seriously took almost 200 shots (I'm still learning the AF on the 5D III), and was only truly happy with a few I took. In fact, I wasn't even sure I was gonna post the pic. But the best advice I can give is to learn the way they move and behave.
I personally like to shoot later in the day, Bright Sunlight seems to kill the shot with bees. (see pick below) To be honest, I think shooting wasps is much easier. They tend to sit still longer and their colors are more vibrant. The bees I was shooting seemed to be very young and never sit still for more than a 1/2 second. I sat around for a long time just watching their movement in my viewfinder and took as many shots as possible. I figure, sooner or later I gotta get 1 or 2 that are decent. :-). I think once I truly get comfortable with the 5DIII's AF the pics will get better. But a lot of credit goes to the 100L 2.8 macro lens. The IS is fantastic when shooting handheld. I've said it a thousand times, it is truly a special lens. I shot the pic above in AI Servo mode, with my shutter @ 2000, ISO 800, f/4.0. Again being late in the day, I had to bump up my ISO and lower my aperture to try and get a faster shutter speed. I actually prefer my shutter to be higher than 2000 when shooting bees.
Heres another one I took but was not happy with. It will end up in the recycle bin. Seeing pics on this site, honestly humbles a person real quick. Just when you think you got a good shot, you see what true professionals shoot. I think that's why it's very hard for me to take a compliment. I say to friends, "sure, you might thinks its a good shot, but I see shots daily from professionals and they make my pics look below average. In all reality, I don't mind that. It helps me become a better photographer.

This is probably one of my favorite shots even though it's in B/W.

I am just a beginner trying my hardest to learn every day. Trust me. If I can take these shots, anyone can with just a little bit of patience. :-)

Nope. No flash used. Just was walking around town late yesterday and saw a bunch of young bees in a flowerbed near a park. I sat around for almost an hour trying to figure out how to take a decent picture of them. Thier movement will drive a man to drink. :-)

Hello, I have one question on you all who has bought this great lens too...
I bought a HOYA HD CIRCULAR PL 67 MM to this 100mm lens but I´m not pretty sure if was it a good idea... ( http://www.hoyafilter.com/products/hoya/HD-01.html ).
On this site is written that the polarizing film is the same as that used in the latest high definition LCD TV screens. It has 25% higher light transmission than standard polarizing film used in current photographic filters.
What do you think about this? I feel that it takes the sharpness, I´m not sure... Do you have some filters too? Or this? Sorry for my english, I´m from Czech Republic. :-)
Thank you for any informations or your opinion.

I did crop the original photo a bit, not too much though. And I used honey to get the bees to stay in place :)

Well, give it another 5 years, they might come out with a 46mp FF sensor yet, and you can do the same amount of cropping as you'd have the same amount of pixels-on-target to the 18mp APS-C sensors of today.
(But by then, the crop sensors probably will have like 30mp. Always behind the 8-ball.)

That's because extension tubes do just that... gets you closer. But sometimes you don't want to be *that* close to you subject. It's the reason fro 100mm macros and 180mm macros.

I finally became a member of the L club! Here is one of my first takes with this wonderful lens, handheld, using fill flash ( with a little pp in ligthroom.) I am loving this lens! I am including a 100% crop. It does loose a lot in the conversion to jpeg to fit here, the original is considerably sharper.

Wow I've never seen a bee (I'm assuming that's what it is haha) like that!

Well, I am not sure about what it was. But it was definitively not a typical bee, in the sense that it wasn't yellow and black (it had a green tint); and it was larger.

I am Not an entomologist and I may be wrong…;
To me it looks like Green Sweat Bee (Agapostemon texanus).
Range: British Columbia and Washington to Maine, south to Mexico and Georgia.
Season: April to November.
