This was taken in Alaska in 2003 from a yacht that my husband and I were working on. I had moved to the flybridge from the bow of the boat. I was using a telephoto and if I had stayed on the bow I would have missed the shot by being too close. The whale came up about 10 feet off the bow of the boat! It was pretty exciting. No modification to the picture other than resizing.

That might be one of the few cases when you want to have a wide angle lens to do wildlife.

Great shot. Would've been exciting to have been there. Only whales I've ever seen we're about 1k off the coast from where I was standing and all you could see was the breath.

Thanks all. The boss had a HUGE lens that he rented for $2000 plus for his Nikon whatever! He couldn't take a decent picture if his life depended on it. He would get mad at me because I took an OK picture! I was so blessed to get the great pictures that I did. In Alaska there are so many whales - they bubble feed - where three or four whales emit bubbles in a circle and the whales take turns coming up through the bubbles with their mouths open and scoop up the little fish. An amazing sight. We are fortunate to be in the Virgin Islands where they mate and have birth their young although it is much rarer to see down here than in Alaska. And yes - we froze in Alaska!!

Great photo... we have enjoyed many a humpback on our trips to Alaska. They are awsome creatures.
