My 300D came this morning. And I've just opened it now. Ten hours later. It's strange but I'm not all that eager to get playing with it. Maybe it's partly because I'm dreading seeing what my Visa balance is going to be this month. I prefer/need to pay my balance off each month and this one is going to be a two- or three-monther. Ugh!
Anyway, I've just finished unpacking it and making sure all the parts and pieces are here and I've just plugged the battery and charger into the wall. I did set the time and date but other than that...
Maybe tomorrow? :-P I'm a little disappointed that I'm not chomping at the bit to get using this thing.

I didn't open my 20D for 4 days after I got it......mostly due to having to work. Now that its open, its getting ALOT of use.
Once you get it open......you'll see....lol.
Congrats...Have fun

It's a great camera. Did you get the kit lense with it? Do you have any other EF lenses? What about a flash unit?
If you're like me, you will find the instruction manual vague, confusing, and lacking important information. The folks here at this forum will fill in the gaps for you. A Magic Lantern Guide for that model may also be a wise investment.
I'm wondering what software they ship with it nowadays. Did you get Digital Photo Professional, or the File Viewer Utility?

When I get around to getting a DSLR I think I will open it in the store!! But hey, wait and see, the same may happen to me by then..... I am sure it won;t be long before it takes a grip on your life and the rest of your credit cards! Enjoy.

When got the 300D I opened the box, checked out the camera then put it back. It wasn't until a week later that I started using it.

I just got the kit lens. My brother has a film Canon Elan7e and has a few lenses and a speedlite so I'll use those if I need to. (You're all laughing at that "if I need to", aren't you?)
As for the software, it ships with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 and the "EOS Digital Solution Disk". I have PSCS so probably won't open Elements. Is there a reason why I should?
I did take one picture last night with the camera set to auto. A picture of a basket surrounded by mess that's a result of me being in the middle of re-arranging my bedroom. I'm going to try and make myself play with it a little today. I do admit that the manual is a little overwhelming (I find) since it seems to go in one ear (or eye in this case) and out the other. It does have a short "pocket guide" though; I may take a look at that first and see if I can retain the basics.

Peggy:
Notice in you signature line that you are "mother to Brogan". Your son?
You have a perfect model there. Just put the dial to "P" and start shooting. If you don't like the pictures, there is always "delete', no cost to shoot (it's all ready cost you    ).
Review the Exif information to see what the camera thinks should be the settings.

Thanks John. Brogan is a pretty happy little guy so he does make for some decent shots. Poor kid probably will be the subject of most of my pictures though I'd love to get in some nature ones too. All in time, all in time, right?
I'm off to read that sticky.

If you've been reading the articles here, you may already know this, but a speedlite designed for film cameras won't be completely functional with a digital. It may work in manual mode, but film and digital cameras use different TTL flash metering systems.

Not necessarily so......
Since the model of the Speedlite wasn't mentioned, it could be one of the more recent models which would indeed be functional with the 20D or other Canon digital cameras. I've got a Elan7 and use both a 420EX and 580EX. Both those Speedlites are E-TTL compatible with my 300D and 20D. I believe if the Speedlite has the "EX" suffix it will work fine with the 20D.
