Visiting a local Nature Preserve, I was surprised to find these remains of an old building. I learned it was a dance hall and speakeasy during prohibition, ultimately burning. It would have been quite a distance from any other civilization in those days. Interestingly, about 20 feet outside the fence is an example of the seashells discarded by early Native Americans who lived On weedon Island. These people lived there about 900 years, but disappeared before the Spanish arrived. There are many islands here formed by discarded seashells.

Hahaha! I forget, not everyone is as old as I am. During the 1920's (not that I was alive then), liquor was outlawed in the US (Prohibition, it was called). Many illegal bars were set up around the country, frequently in such remote places that it was unlikely they would be discovered by the authorities. They were called "speakeasies" because everyone would try to be quiet to avoid detection.
