1st impressions... after getting it out of the box, I noticed how nicely built it seems... Very nice feeling zoom, & a great looking finish on the outside. Now onto the 10D it goes... and here a photo I snapped right in front of my house. I'll probably be playing with it all weekend, so I'm hoping to get some better shots.

I know... we were being blinded!!! And to top it all off, temps reached 90+ deg F, so there were many people (including myself) wearing shorts... way too many pale white legs roaming around. Here are a couple that I took at the coffee shop up the street from me with the Tokina... no flash was used either. Both photos have been PS'd & Noise Ninja'd.

Okay, I would have liked a Canon EF17-40 f4 or EF16-35 f2.8, but both are expensive (especially the EF16-35). So I chose the Tokina over Sigma & Tamron offerings due to the cost & the wide 12mm with a constant aperture of 4. At the 12mm end of the zoom, photos almost look like I used a fisheye lens. The focus seems a bit soft wide open, I'll have to try some shots with a tripod & at an aperture of f8 or smaller.

This lens feels very well built. The length of the lens doesn't change while forcusing or zooming. And it looks pretty nice on the 10D.

Here are a couple of shots I took this morning... both were taken in Av priority, set at f8 with an ISO of 800. The 1st photo was taken at a focal length of 12mm & the 2nd was at 17mm. Of course these have been resized, PS'd & Noise Ninja'd.

That lens is very tempting, I wish it would work on my 1D Mark II.

Nice pics! I am still trying to decide Tokina 12-24, or Sigma 12-24. The posted pics are helpful, hopefully I can make a decesion soon.

Yeah, the Tokina & the Sigma are very close, but the Tokina won me with the price. I have no regrets so far.

Is there not another consideration here:

the Sigma works on Film and Full frame digital, so will work if you upgrade in a few years time to FF, while the Tokina won't. This may also affect resale value?

That's a good point, too. I'm not all too worried about that though, I like many others are hoping to up-grade to "L" series lens someday. I would probably upgrade lenses before moving to a FF body. Thanks for bringing up another point that needs to be considered when looking at lens purchases.

The Tokina gets some great reviews. Most rate it slightly ahead of the Sigma 12-24, and very close to the Canon 10-22. And, the price is very good.
Not to mention the fact that Sigmas always seem to have compatibility problems down the road with new cameras. Tokinas and Tamrons seem to be much better in this regard.
