so i was reading through my manual yesterday and the only thing i saw you could do with an sd card on the 1ds MKII was back up or put jpg's there, is this correct or am i slightly retarted?

my hope was (is) that if i fill the cf card it will automatically store on the sd card, and provide some sort of notification that it is doing that?
is this correct?

I believe that it will not automatically switch. I'm not sure if the 1Ds2 is like the 1D2 or the 1D2N, where you can record RAW to CF and JPEG to SD, but on the 1D2, you can either record to both at the same time or only one, which you have to choose. I haven't had an SD in my 1D2 yet but I think it's an easy switch of a couple of buttons.

I don't believe it automatically rolls over; you can store either RAW or JPEG on either card, or you can mirror the two. Or you can manually switch between cards (quickest way, I believe, is to pop the full card so the camera shifts to the new empty one). The 1D3 series will automatically fall over to the new card.

Like Jon said. Pop the full one out & it automatically selects the remaining card, and if you've set it to "Back Up" it will show a warning that "backup is not possible" due to having only 1 card installed. In backup it copies the same files to both cards, It DOES NOT copy RAW to one and JPG to the other.
You can also use the menu to select one or the other card, but if you haven't memorized the drill the removal of the full one works fine.
