Here's mine, done today. It's our kitchen, our proverbial and actual window to the world. We have a regular dining room, and we're anything but recluses (though I wouldn't mind isolating myself from the world for a century or two), but our kitchen is where our lives happen.

In here we discuss anything and everything. We break our fasts here, enjoy our lunches, and dine on everything from the mundane to the exotic. Sometimes outside it's green, sometimes white, sometimes dark.

On Sunday of this week the weather was beautiful outside. The Wife™, The Kiddo™, and The Mom-In-Law™ were out shopping. I spent the day baking beans in the lower oven. The windows were open and it was just another Sunday. We could have had different fare for dinner; I could have done other things on such a fine day. I was in our home preparing a feast. :)

one of the most beatiful moments of this week... three month afther two big surgeries (one of them took 6 hours, she got a new aorta) my 94 year old grandma took the 6 hours travel and visited us. She is almost blind but wanted to write a blessing to my children even though she was not able to see what she wrote. I love this picture becouse it shows so much of her personality, a beautiful old fighter, that do what she can to tell me and my children that she loves us.

My "beauty" here is that I HAVE a job. That I AM alive. I own a lawn/landscape business, and I cherish days that look like this. While most people are in this traffic because they HAVE to be, I am in it because I have a DAY OFF! Remember, what is everyday for you, is not everyday for everybody. And, what makes you angry as hell, makes others very thankful, and happy, for plenty of other reasons.

Of course with America's Fall comes our Spring, this year it has been cold and stormy, more like mid Winter. The past week has been little different but I noticed a tree in blossom at the bottom of our yard. Sometimes one sees something and thinks," Yeah that is nice, and moves on," but a closer look under different conditions look can reveal some of Nature's true beauty.

The night was dark, raining, bitter cold wind blowing making it dificult for me to breathe (I have advanced emphysema and asthma), but I put on my raincoat, took a torch, my spectacles, the 400D out down to the tree in blossom. I needed the torch and spectacles to see what I was after, and found that my camera did not want to focus in the dark so held the torch to focus the camera while fumbling with my spectacles, and struggling to breathe. Rather an act, but I did get this:

Well the wife and I took a break from the home remodel and headed north to Wisconsin for the weekend, just her and I and NO KIDS! We really needed this weekend together to help remember there's more to life than just work and raising kids. We both love the outdoors and thats something that has been missing in our lives this year between work and the seemingly constant rain and cool weather. So we hiked up this bluff and saw many views similar to this one, and this is the beauty we enjoyed together.

Time's up, a great set of pictures to choose from :)

kent andersen
12th of October 2009 (Mon), 03:01
wow, so many good pictures to choose from. Most of them deserves to be the winner this time, so in my search for the winner I have to find the arguments why I am not choosing the others. This is not going to be easy.

I would apreciate if people could share why a certain picture is elected, but also why others are not. I learn alot by reading coments on photos. So I hope its ok for all of you that I give lots of comments here.

When I vote the first criteria is to find a picture that gives me the best everyday experience. It means the picture that I can conect to and say... this is part of everyday life. The second criteria is about the quality of the photo.

For me it stands between the following pictures:

justAl s cat. That is just such a funny picture.
ssracers wonderful bathing picture
evil edges excelent car portrait..
will-sans jazzy cat.
dyords flower...

The picture that gave me the biggest wow experience was dyords picture. The colours are just screaming to me. Even though the colours looks to much to be real, it is still a perfect wonderful macro in my eyes. I like the croping and the way the overexposure makes the flower sparkl. The reason why I am not voting for this one is that there is other pictures that are giving me a stronger everyday feeling, and flower pictures are also easyer to make good. (You can do almost anything with a flower in Photoshop and it will still look good, vs you can work for hours with skin colour and it still looks weard). He gets the colour price this time, I would definently loved to put his picture in a frame, but I am not getting an everyday feeling from his picture.

Will Sans picture transfers a wonderful everyday atmosphäre. I can so much connect with that picture. There is not so much happening in the picture, but that is how most everyday goes. Will San has the everyday atmosphäre in his picture. I would have made this picture the winner if the cats eye was sharper and perfect exposed. An HDR cind of PP on this picture would have made a big difference.

The Snapshot from justAl is so funny. Its a great picture. To make it a winner I would have loved to see another cropping. The way half of the head is cuted off the man is making the picture less balanced. I somhow feels my eyes being drawn out of the picture to search for the rest of his head.

Eviledges car picture is so good. The colours of the wood, the reflex from the window, how the car is shining... this picture could definently sell this car. It is an everyday picture, and is a convincing picture quality. I find it difficult to make good pictures of cars. Here the contrast between the red car and the shadow of the wood is making the car atractive. To make animals, children, flowers, people etc looking good is somehow easier. (at least for me). I am so much tempted to make this picture a winner.

I love pictures of children and ssracer has definently made a good one. I can connect fully with this picture. This is so much an everyday life picture. There is several things in the picture that I like. The cropping, the wather falling under the duck, the way he is holding the duck and looking into the ducks eyes, his mouth... I wonder what cind of sound he is making. You have catched a moment here, the joy of playing and the way the child is catched deep in his fantasy world is just touching. The only thing that I would have improved on the pictures is the eyebrow of the child, it would be great to see them a bit more sharper. With a mask around them and unsharpmasks in photoshop you could probably made them sharper without making it look oversharpened. But since you have made colours on the duck only, you are leading my eyes to the duck instad. I find youre picture a worthy winner to.

For me it stands between ssracer and eviledges. I can't decide at the moment. I think I come back in a couple of days and make my decision afther I have read other peoples comment.

Update: I think I stay on ssracer.

looks like scorpioarun and ckort were on the same place and same time... even without reading that they were both in winsconsin at that time...

anyhow... i haven't decided yet who to vote.. but I'm eyeing to kiwicris' photo... it's great picture!!! though everyone did a great job!!

Thanks Dyord. That is praise indeed. :)

There are a lot of great pictures this time, and it is interesting to see what qualifies as everyday things to different people, and their perspective on them. I am no expert at post processing or Photoshop, I certainly do not consider myself to be a good enough photographer to critique other's work. I just know what I like, and hopefully the photographer liked their finished presentation.

My vote goes to Soliwit, the reason why is perhaps unusual. I know Soliwit handmakes rugs, so to her they are an everyday thing, but I like this picture because it says do not touch in several places, I am a fairly tactile sort of person so I do want to touch and stroke the soft textures, being told not to, makes me want to do it even more

So Soliwit gets my vote.

Soliwit gets my vote.

The colours of the rug are spectacular and the messages on the frame drive me to want to know more. Where is this place, why is it so important, at what stage is the project at, how long is left.

Soliwit, thumbs up!

So many great images! I couldn't get my act together for this challenge.
kiwichris, DYORD beautiful (love the bokah Chris!). chopper5654 I hear ya. mullhawk, kent anderson, ckort, scorpioarun, Evil_Edge lovely captures of what I would call special moments. tc1761 nice composition and depth of field(welcome to the Challenge).
The ones that spoke to me of "everyday" were mathogre's kitchen (too clean to be real:p); sk8erdh36's deer(yeah, I live in a rural area too)-I think a looser crop would improve this shot; ssracer's kiddo; soliwit's work day; will-san's chillin' kitty; and justAL-I can't see enough of Murray:(
Having said all that -- soliwit gets my vote. Love the colors, the messages, and the fact that she finds work beautiful!
Kent -- you wanted comments !!:D

I politely decline to vote, being a participant in the challenge. However, after the contest closed my thought was that the image from JustAL of Murray and him was the best. In this image I immediately get the sense of Murray's little teeth nibbling on Al's finger, and the paws gently holding his hand. This is the everyday personal experience that makes life good.

Is it technically the best? I don't know. Artistically I think it is. An image that brings me into the photograph is one that is extraordinary.

my vote goes to SSRACER after careful deliberation.

you guys are awesome. and, your abilities and interpretations made for some tough choices. however, i feel that all the pictures did not reflect things that happen "every day." beautiful, yes, but not every day.

however, any of us with kids lose the beauty in bathtime.....every, every, every day. lol. well, and, it's just a great photo. great jobs, guys.

Decided! I'm still with kiwichris' photo.. quality is perfect. (focus, exposure, cropping, etc.) and of course the subject. Earth would be soo much less wonderful without flowers. And to see that one flower has bloomed and some other that have yet to bloom... give the feeling of hope and never ending beauty to see.

Nice work everyone...love the enthusiasm in this group....! I generally like pictures that I connect to, or those that connect to me through the picture....and in that sense I liked JustAl's self portrait (isn't that not !? ),Kent's Grandma,SS Racer's kid, Kiwi chris's flower buds with the droplets..and others too in different ways. Now I am on a good learning curve and tending to look very closely at those that are really good in quality IMO to learn from it and inspire me to take good pictures...though I would have loved to explore this topic more with my camera, time has been a constraint but I sure am going to have this in mind to create pictures depicting the ' beauty of everyday life' in my on going learning quest . Now to my vote ...after toying with Just Al and Kiwichris... Just Al gets my vote with a very very close second for Kiwichris..loved both of em..the quality, the lighting, focus and exposures...and based my vote on what I would have wished I had taken..and my pick was Just Al.

I am yet to sort out the fall pictures taken during the weekend...but have posted some of them at my flickr page that I felt came out well..do have a look and let me know how best I could have improved on my shots. I would be very glad to hear the comments. They were taken in and around Wausau, Wisconsin . I am not sure if I would have chanced upon Ckort around this area...!!

I really like this group. I really look forward to a new challenge and seeing a new set of images. There are quite a few images that really work for me.
My Vote goes to Just AL

A few other images were close for me but I disqualified them in my mind because, as chopper said, they were more about special events than day to day beauty.

Good job everyone.

Sorry I mised this one, Great photos. But I cast my vote for SSRacer.

I could really relate to that photo and anyone that has been there(Bathed the youngens) remembers the shear joy that they enjoyed and the electric feeling as a father (or mother grandmother etc..) that you are given to see them. Such Day to day Beauty in those moments!! for everyone, including those of us that get to see those pictures. It brings back those memories that are what real joy is all about, those wonderful Beautiful memories!!!

ok, I totally forgot to vote!!! Thank you KiwiChris to give me the gentle reminder :-)
This is a really hard vote too, so many really catchy pictures..........

Ok, I have to go with the picture that first jumped at me and that is justAL with his Murray, just a very fun picture and I can so imagine how he does this every day, picking up his cat and 'fighting' him, he was very very close followed by kiwichris and kent andersen........ok back to bed for me, yuk, I hate colds.........

Hey all! Busy week here on the Rebel Challenge, lots of great entries as I suspected would happen. This was a good subject with lots of different takes. It was interesting to see what everyones "everyday beauty" is. The photo that spoke to me the most was JustAl's. You can feel the companionship from that photo...and it's priceless. Pets can be loved as much as a sibling or a child or other family member. Tecnically it's a great photo in thats it's nicely lite, with a good exposure and composition and the story here is easy to see.

So my vote is for JustAl, well done sir!

it'll be great to have another "regular" in here. i must say i am impressed with how this has grown in the few weeks i have taken part. it really is fun, and i, too, am impressed with this group of people....not photographers.

once you participate in one or two, you will just sort of know when to shoot the theme and then vote. you wont pay attention to the dates too much after that. welcome in.

Thats funny... :)

I thought all of you had the prophetic gift, and was already well informed about what pictures that would be posted. :)

By the way, the winner of this week should be really proud. This is not an easy week to winn, so many good pictures.

I really loved your picture, like ckort said, something about seeing your relationship with your cat captured in a picture.
