you may want to have this moved to motorsports talk or accessories and storage..... youll probably get more help there.

what body do you have? xxD's have some weather "sealing", not water, nor weather/dust proof, it's more weather "resistant".
My rebel XT doesn't stand up to well to sand, having shot at a couple sand only tracks. Neither did the kit lenses i used to have.
My 40D handles sand and moisture alot better, and now I use "L" lenses only, that are pretty much weather proof.

Shooting in the sand, assuming it's not to dusty, all you need to do is stand up wind as much as possible. If the whole place is dusty, your shots won't likely turn out to well anyways.
At the local camera shop, they have temporary camera/lens covers that are pretty cheap, I keep 1 with me in my pack just in case I need to be out in heavy rain, or extremely muddy conditions. I think they were about $10 for 2. They are basically just a light plastic "sock" that goes over everything.
If it's not windy, then you shouldn't have a hard time keeping your camera safe, just don't get in the way of the roost, and if it's dusty, don't go switching lenses outside if you want to keep a clean mirror, etc.
