These aren't great shots but I wanted to share them anyway.
I saw this Kaman K-max helicopter (owned by Timberline Helicopters) flying in the Grand Tetons a few weeks ago. I hadn't ever seen one of these before...it was an interesting 'copter.
enjoy.

Wow, That is one strange bird. What is it designed for?

According to their website, it's for "medium-lift" duty and firefighting. More here -> http://www.kamanaero.com/helicopters/kmax.html

These birds need to flap their wings to stay in the air, too!

Looks a bit different than last year.. It was at the local airshow, dropped a truck from WAY UP, turned it into a pancake! The anouncer discribed it as being rescued from Switzerland and restored down to every nut and bolt.

The Marine Corps flew an early Kaman model way back when...

Like Eric said, they are used quite a bit for wildfire firefighting operations and aerial crane work. I saw one a few years ago lifting HVAC units on top of a "high-rise." One of the pilots I chat w/ from time to time used to fly them out West and says that they are great to fly.

Nice captures of a rather "unusual" mechanical bird.

I throw in the old addage, "Helicopters fly because they're so ugly that the earth repels them."
Great shots of an interesting helicopter.
