Just a quick question if anyone happens to know.. My dad has a Speedlite from an old AE1 that he got many many years ago. I have no idea what model it is, but was wondering if it might fit my Rebel XT? I'd love to try it out but I wasn't exactly planning in advance and I'm a 3 hour drive away with my sisters wedding coming up this weekend. I don't know whether to buy a new flash (like the 430EX on sale at Blacks this week in Canada) or to try my luck with dad's unit..? Anyone know if it might possibly work?

TIA! :)

Will it fit? Sure it will!

Will it work? Dunno...

I had a Canon 155a Speedlight and it worked. By that, I mean it would flash at whatever the settings on the flash were. There is no communication with your camera that would allow ETTL. You would have to set your camera manually for what the setting is on the flash.
I say, save some grief and buy (or rent (http://www.borrowlenses.com/category/canon_flash)) a flash.

Good luck.

The good news is that it will work just as well on your digital SLR as it ever did with a film camera.

The bad news is that using it effectively requires understanding some concepts, and some practice. Without that, you're better off with the pop-up flash on your Rebel XT.

Well.. I guess that it will 'sort of' work is good news. ;) That flash is a great unit, always worked amazing on the old AE1. I guess my real problem is that I really have no idea how to use it properly at all. I just thought it might give me an opportunity to take a few shots in the hall which is probably going to be pretty poorly lit. I didn't think I'd have a ton of opportunities during the day since I'm in the bridal party. I can always hope though! I know how to take shots outside 'sans' flash since I've got lots of practice at that.. maybe I could experiment a bit outside on Friday night or something.. :)
