My wife liked this photo the best of about a dozen. What should be done to improve here.

If your wife liked this best, there is nothing wrong with it! :)

Honestly I'm not sure here... The colors are very good. The problem I see is the background, with the first area of mulch cutting behind the bird's neck and the second area butting against its head. With just green at those points, and less DOF, I think it would be improved. I'd also like to see the bird a little more to the left, so that it had some more space to move into the frame. Others may disagree.
