What are your thoughts on this? Would it make sense to not have a website and just have an on-going blog (web log)?

Yes, you can configure wordpress many different ways including using static pages for some content.

I use Wordpress as my main page and have my photos hosted on a smugmug site (set up on a subdomain) that is accessible from my main page.

Without a doubt it can be used. How effective it will be is another question. There are thousands of themes you can get for a blog. Some are just pretty things, others are pretty and also optimized for SEO. Look around the web, you will see many, many choices. Almost too many. There are themes from a simple blog, to full fledged e-commerce.

I was thinking about doing this and glad to see that someone else has it done this way.

How long did it take you set up the PixoPoint plugin?

It's very possible, all you need to do is find and modify the right theme. The theme I have on my blog has an option when creating pages to have an extra wide page that has no sidebar...so I could easily put a slide show in there and have it as a gallery if I wanted.

My site, although small and a work in progress, is all wordpress. It's a very powerful, customizable platform with basically any kind of plugin you'll need available. All for free.

A hosted Wordpress solution will have a ton of themes available, so I don't think this is entirely a bad idea. As mentioned already, Wordpress has a ton of themes available & your decision may depend on what you're trying to accomplish.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm going to attempt a blog and let you know how it turns out.
