I know this shot is nothing special compared to some of the staggering Owl pictures seen on this forum ,but i must share this with you.
A local nature reserve has reported these little Owls on an ajoining field.
I sat out this evening with my Sigma zoom and got some pictures of an animal i had never seen before.
I have been trying to get a picture of an Owl for a year or two.
I am quite excited by it all ,but must get a better lens though:p

Simon, you've made the first step toward wildlife photography. You got the first shot. Now study the bird and figure out its habits. Birds are very habitual creatures. Often, they feed early in the morning and late in the evening, and that is tough on the photographer.

One option is to get a very long lens, like 400mm or longer.

Another option is to use what we Yanks call a blind. I believe you Brits call it a hide. Check with the park people and see what they allow. Set up with a folding chair and then just wait for the little beasties to come out.

If you are serious about it, do both options.

Talk to the local birders, and find out where they go to use their binoculars.

Congratulations on your shot. You picked a tough one to start with but got him.

Hey, that's a great shot for a first try. I've never tried to shoot birds, but I can see that the obstacles to even getting the bird in the viewfinder are enormous. You did good!

I agree, excellent first shot. I too have recently started into bird photography, I am now using a Criterion 4000 telephoto lens on my D60. works great for long range shots, but, must have a solid tripod for clear shots. Post more photos as you get them.

Its a great first effort Simon.

Little Owl is one of the few species I miss since coming north. :(
They are diurnal and can often be seen in pairs sitting in trees like that. They are quite confiding too. Did you notice a second one?

Thanks for sharing
