View Full Version : WORLDWIDE PHOTO WEEK: PART 185 - Macro

joayne
5th of October 2009 (Mon), 10:28
Every week we select a new theme, and then go out and shoot that theme. This week the theme is "Macro". If you do not have a Macro lens, please use your 50mm, or the widest aperture that you can get close with and let us know what you did use.

As always be as imaginative/creative as you like when interpreting the theme, creativity is what we're looking for!

Here are the rules:

1. Shots need to be taken between sunrise Monday and sunset the following Sunday. Because this activity is supposed to encourage us to get out and shoot, please don't post old shots from your archives. Snap shots and art are equally welcome -- just get out & shoot, and then share!

2. Post your shots at any time during the week.

3. Post a maximum of two shots if you're uploading them to POTN (i.e., attaching them). You can post more than two if you're linking to shots that are not hosted by POTN (i.e.,embedding them), but keep within POTN rules. Also keep within POTN rules about size. A copy of the size rules can be found here: IMAGE POSTING RULES (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=194511)

An index to previous weeks can be found here: POTN WORLDWIDE PHOTO DAY INDEX (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=170603)

That's it! Have fun!

And remember, sometimes manual focus will work better than auto when getting close up!

no macro lenses for me. :(

The 50 will get you in there quite close.. It is not too fussy about getting right up to the subject.. we want you to share what you can!

Well I tried to get some bee macros today, but the breeze.. ever so slight .. was my nemesis!
Everyone just slightly blurry.. I'll try later with the tripod. :)

I did get a flower that is about to burst open. That is the beauty of the desert, if you can get past the scorching summers, we have 2 flowering and growing seasons.. spring and fall. My wildflowers are blooming all over again!

Here is a crop at around 50%:

Looks like you've had a bit of frost there John..

Lovely shot with beautiful pp.. The water drops add just that much extra!

So, John, after reading the specs, is auto-focus available to you or are you manually focusing?
Spot on which ever :)

I surely am enjoying everyone's shots.
They're super!

I am trying to get out with the camera, but having trouble finding the opportunity.
And tomorrow will bring rain all day.

Last week I found some mysterious bugs on the milkweed plants.
I'd like to shoot them so that someone might be able to identify them.

Meanwhile, I'm eager to see more posts!
Looks like everyone's having fun.:D

Shooting takes some of the pain out of cleaning, eh, Monty :lol:

Barbara.. you can always shoot indoors

One of the things I like most about Macro, is what you see after you shoot. Here is some wild millet in the process of pollination... It seems to take care of itself

Well then,

I found a bug in my home yesterday, and it became lifeless as I went about preparations to photograph it -- I think it found my freezer somewhat inhospitable because I had other things to do. Anyway, I had to settle for one of those lying down "come hither" poses.

I had the 1D3 and the 100 f/2.8 macro with three tubes stacked for this (36, 24, 12) and I'm not really thrilled at the fine sharpness, but oh well, this is my macro for the week:

Original shot:
http://www.pbase.com/image/118081302/original.jpg

Since the bug couldn't cooperate, I had to rotate and crop the above pic for a "head and shoulders portrait":

........I know, the macro bug folks do that all the time, but I thought it was just the 'fridge to slow them down a bit  Well it did give you a nice pose!

Sorry I missed this question...
No it is a Manual Focus and Manual aperture lens on a m42 mount

........I know, the macro bug folks do that all the time, but I thought it was just the 'fridge to slow them down a bit

Not all of us, some of us macro photographers don't put the insects through anything, we capture them in there natural life.
ex. here during my lunch today I went outside I noticed this insect was also having there lunch captured at 4 x life size

I read your post incorrectly at first... I thought this was your lunch!!

I had to re-read!

I like to "capture" them in the au natural also! Not putting critters in my fridge.. no telling what they might get up to!

As the weather forecast promised, it rained on & off most of yesterday.
Between showers I ventured out to shoot those milk weed bugs I mentioned the other day.
And here they are (please let me know if you know what they are).

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-8/812687/OrangeBugs.jpg

A few feet away from the bugs I found these berries that the birds like so much.

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-8/812687/Berries2.jpg

And beside the berries was a vine that had berries of its own.

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-8/812687/VineBerries2.jpg

Then I stopped by this tomato. I planted it last Spring as an experiment, putting it in the center of a bed of black-eyed susans because I like tomatoes but have no space for them. I got exactly one tomato all summer. Disappointed. And this one will never ripen before our first frost.

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-8/812687/Tomato.jpg

While shooting the tomato,I noticed a small splash of orange in the upper right corner. When I investigated, I found this ugly old tomato worm. No wonder my tomato plant didn't produce!

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-8/812687/TomatoWorm.jpg

As I headed back to the house, I saw this guy. Mantises are always willing to pose ever so patiently.

Nice spider Ken!

It was supposed to be 29 here this morning, hence my joking suggestion for frost. Not sure if it was that cold because I slept in! Today we removed all of the perennials from our yard and I came across a couple fun critters to shoot:

Lovely black and yellow spider:

Slimy slug:

And I'll second (or third or whatever) the window idea :-)
