I understand black fly season and I would wear the same rig if I were there. Great shots. Never seen anything quite like that before.

 I feel safe. You're in NH, I'm in Canada.

Function over fashion. Sometimes you just have to, I guess. Beautiful subject too!

Is that a horse wearing a yarmulke? I didn't even know that it was Jewish.

Fashionable or not, I think that is a very creative solution to the back fly problem. We don't have black flies, but the common flies give horses fits. If two or more horse are together, they will stand at opposite ends so each can swish its tail to benefit the other. (I've seen that thousands of times.) A local horse that's all alone wears a mesh head-piece that I've never seen before. The horse can readily see through the mesh, but flies are kept out. Not as fashionable as your horse. (Incidentally, in the attached photo, my wife is helping the twin grand-daughters feed a carrot to the horsie.)

Thanks all. Hey Marie, it appears that bad crocheting happens to good horses on your side of the pond too.:D

Here's 2 more pics from today. First one looks like he's trying to hide from the shame of it all. He's really trying to sneak a bit of grass, which he knows he's not supposed to do while he has a bit in his mouth.

The second just goes to show that both owner and horse have a sense of humor about the whole thing.;)

So that's what those things are for? I see horses wearing those all the time in Griffith Park and never understood why.

The crocheted version is very "Haute Couture" and can come in many colors, although black would be considered the best.
The netted version is also very stylish and does come in many colors and patterns also, but it is considered more for everyday wear. :)

I should send this link to my sister in law up in Weare... She has several horses and would get a real chuckle of of those photos.

I am obviously not the first to laugh but I admit I got a good chuckle.
Interesting shots.
Bob, They look more Amish then Jewish to me. Yarmulkes don't usually have fringes and ear covers!

The original use was to keep flys off the horses ears and away from the eyes. However it's common nowadays to use one to keep the wind out of their ears and at shows they are used in conjunction with a lot of cotton balls to drown out noise from the crowd.

Fly bonnets are very popular with the grand prix jumpers....they have been for years and years.
