View Full Version : mysterious lines appearing - Elements

Ok, this is a problem that occurs randomly when I process images in Photoshop Elements 2.0

Short, perfectly horizontal lines appear at random in the picture when I save it in JPG format after making adjustments (brightness, contrast, adding a semi-transparent blurred layer over the main image to produce a soft focus effect, etc.)

There is never more than one or two lines and they are always very short (not more than 1/20th of the total width of the image, let's say) and very thin (one or two pixels).

Anyone seen this before? Any idea what it might be?

I would post an example but the picture is too big and since it happens randomly I can't make it happen. I tried cropping my image but when I save it, the jpg compression makes the line disappear or fade a little.

My computer is a Presario 700 series notebook (not the best, I know) with 1Ghz AMD processor and 250Mb RAM.

I think you may need a new lens. (Sorry, just kidding. I have no idea what is causing the problem, but a new lens seems to be a common solution for nearly any problem.)

ehehe, that's funny :)

Of course that's not the problem, since the lines appear after the image has been processed in Photoshop Elements 2.0

when it happens, does it always happen in the same area of your picture? is the color of the lines consistent? if so, that may point to dead pixels in the sensor.

if not, it could be your media, or something related to writing or reading of the media. try a different media card if you have another.

also, how are you copying the pictures to your computer? card reader or direct camera connection? try a different method if possible.

please post a 100% crop of the problem area if possible.

- does it always happen in the same area of your picture?
no

- is the color of the lines consistent?
From one picture to the other, no. But on a given picture, the line is one single color.

- how are you copying the pictures to your computer?
direct camera connection

Thank you for your interest. Just to be clear, the pictures are fine before I process them in Photoshop.

I can't upload the pic because .bmp is not accepted by the system (the forum). The original .jpg is to big to send. If I crop and resave to jpg, the line disappears because of the compression.

umm that's quite puzzling. i haven't used PSE before, but i'm pretty sure the kind of post processing you mentioned wouldn't create strange articfacts in PS unless they are very extreme.

do you shoot in RAW or jpg? i'm PM'ing you with my email, if you don't mind you can email me your pix. no promises though. :p

Thanks rentboi, I sent you a PM.

For the record, so far the problem only occurs when I shoot raw and post process in Photoshop Elements 2.0

It does not occur every single time. And since PSE 2.0 does not read canon raw files, I have to convert it first to tiff or something. That part (with the Fileviewer provided by Canon) is never a problem. No bizarre lines there. It's the step after with PSE that has been, in a few instances, a very annoying problem.
