I currently have a Canon backpack in which I carry my photo gear, laptop, and assorted other stuff and I prefer to stuff it under the seat in front of me rather than in the overhead compartment where it's out of my sight. I'm thinking a bigger bag is in my future but I'd still like to be able to stuff it under the seat. Will either of these bags (10" and 10.5" thick according to the web site) fit under the seat? I haven't flown in a while and can't remember how much clearance my current backpack has.

I have a Tamrac 5 and I'm not so sure, don't airline seats have just enough room for your feet in front? What's wrong with putting it in the overhead compartment? No-one will take it.
I'll certainly be interested in what others think.

I've put the 5X in the overhead compartment, with a Gitzo 1541t attached, with no problem. I think it will definitely be too big to go under the seat.

There's a good amount of room under there, plenty for my loaded Canon backpack, but the Tamrac Expeditions are quite a bit thicker. I like to throw everything in my backpack during flight (including my wallet because I don't like sitting on it on a hard seat for hours) and I like having my stuff handy and safe.

I also have the 5. I usually put it in the overhead compartment as well.

I have a Think Tank Speed Racer which I can stuff full but get the zipper closed, but nothing in outside end compartments (actually mesh style stretch compartments) and it's a tight fit under the seat but it does go under. Check it's measurements against what you'd like, but I wouldn't recommend anything more than an inch higher / wider / thicker unless you won't stuff it full. When I fly my camera bag & carry on both have an assortment of photo & dive gear stuffed into them somewhere.

I agree with the others, I don't think it will go under, I put my 6x up in the overheads with no trouble :)
