Do I need to register a copyright for images I want to submit to stock photography sites?

Depends on what "do I need to" means. Is it required? No. Should you register all your work that will be published? Yes, becuase a lawyer likely won't take your copyright infringement case unless you do and it's the only way you can recover legal fees and damages.

The biggest thing to worry about with stock sites though, besides registering your copyrights, is releases. You can't post pictures of people without a release if you want them used for anything but editorial purposes which limits the marketability of your photos.
