I was bored the other day and i had a piece of scrap plexi laying around so i decided to make a diffuser. I made a template out of MDF then routed out the shape, then a little bit of filing/sanding to make it fit over the lens mount. I sandes the faces of the plexi with 80grit paper then went over it with 400grit to take the edge off. turned out pretty good. It seems to take the harshness out of the flash but i am not 100% sure if it really does any more than just turning down the strength of the flash.... anyways it was worth the time it took to make and it may come in handy sometimes....

Nice approach. I've been using a small piece of diffuser with little velcro tabs; flash dialed down on the G9 to fire an off camera flash. Works well.

For a "diffuser" to work, it should be designed so that the tiny flash of the G9 becomes a larger source of light via the diffuser. So if there is enough distance between your device and the G9 flash such that the G9 flash lights up the device and the device then lights up the scene then the device will appear to work. Otherwise, the effect is the same as taping a piece of frosted tape across the G9 flash (no effect except reduction of power).
Here's an example of an early attempt of mine using my G9, an optically triggered external flash and a piece of paper: http://lightdescription.blogspot.com/2007/11/g9-and-flash.html
Lots of other stuff in my blog about G9 and flash, just click on "flash" in the label section.

yeah, the "diffuser" doesnt really have any benifit. In every test i have done, it is no different than just turning down the flash power... ohh well it was worth the time to try it out, and i learned a bit about fabricating with plexi...

I had some good results recently holding my Sto-Fen omni-bounce diffuser in front of my G9 flash for this macro shot. I couldn't get the flash power controlled enough to properly light the delicate parts of this Cosmos flower until I used the diffuser. The diffuser is normally used on my 430EX II flash.
