I have a 17" LCD on my toshiba laptop. When sharpening using USM in PS, the image seems to have alot of jaggies...almost like its been oversharpened. Then if I save the image to a folder, open it in windows picture viewer....it looks perfect. If I sharpen to the point where I am just under the threshold to start showing jaggies in PS, then the image looks soft when saved and viewed in another program.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Its making it very difficult to properly sharpen an image without alot of extra work.

My best guess is PS lets you view at full dpi and most other SW only let you see it at a lower dpi. Your LCD may not be able to handle all the dpi resulting in jagged image. Best way to tell is to print out the picture and see if you still have the Jagged edge. My 0.02.

Are you looking at the photo at 100% zoom in PS or did you zoom it out to 25%, 33%, .... ?
When you zoom it out, Photoshop may display jaggies like that, because it uses a quick but not so accurate algorithm to resize the image to fit it on the screen.

Every program uses different algorithms for quick scaling to fit the images on the screen. Some will lean toward sharpness and some will lean toward smoothness. If your goal is to have images appear just right on the screen, you should save another copy resized to match your screen resolution so they fit without having to be scaled down.

I have a Toshiba with a 17" screen and have the same problem. Let's face it, laptop screens are mostly crap for photo work. I use mine to download images from the card, discard obviously bad shots that can't be salvaged, but just don't use it for editing. I know you don't want to hear this but I paid a ton of money, as I'm sure you did, and it's good for portability, but get something else for photo work. I use a Cornea 19" monitor and it's satisfactory as most good LCD's are. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info.......right my laptop is my main computer, so for now its all I have. I want to get a desktop PC in the near future, but for now I am sticking with this one.
Thanks again!
