View Full Version : POTN G-series Speed Challenge #244 - Athletes in Action

Well, I apologize to the members of the forum if I picked the wrong subject. I thought there would be many more entries since everyone I know has images of some relative in action. With that said all the entries were interesting and judging was a major challenge (maybe I'm lucky there weren't more).

Comments:

marie: Simple facial shot and I kept coming back to it because I could not figure out the expression. Can't tell if it is relief the run is over, pleasure it has just begun or just deep concentration. Nice capture specially if she was moving.

Maureen Souza: This meets all my criteria for a good action image with the added interest of a Kilt. Since I am part scottish I tried to look up the tartan and I think is is Graham but it is hard to tell in the image. Great composition and the high contrast seems to add rather than subtract. (I should tell you I once saw a guy in a kilt shoot an action pistol match and it was ok till he went prone - EWWWWWW!)

rpolitsr: Good capture of a very intent competitor. Color is just vibrant - seen this in all your photos in the past also. Very interesting subject that most people don't often get to see.

Boutty: There aren't many athletic events with more action than table tennis. Great capture of the ball in flight - I think that is it in the upper right. Technically a super shot as I know from experience that indoor shots of action are difficult with the G series cameras. The exposure even picks up the crowd in the background. I do see you have that same guy that always gets the back of his head in my shots - sometimes I just want to yell "down in front."

Kevan_G9: This image is certainly unique and I would never have thought of this kind of athletics. The black and white works and the hands have enough character to be interesting.

First: Maureen Souza
Second: Boutty
Third: rpolitsr

Thank you all for entering. It's all yours Maureen.

Challenge #244 - Athletes in Action

Welcome to Challenge #244 - Athletes in Action. What I would like to see is a capture of athletes of any type in motion integral to their sport. This can include blurred action or stop action. It is a real challenge sometimes because of shutter lag, but it can be done very well. As usual depiction of the action and composition will be the deciding factors.

Have Fun,

Paul B

Paul,

Sorry I couldn't give the challenge its due. Tough work week and weekend chores ate up most of my free time. I thought about attending the local high school's football game, if they had a home game, but such freedom wasn't available to me. On a lark, I thought thumb wrestling would add some levity, so went with that instead. The problem was getting my wife to be a willing hand model. I figured giving her the pin was just dessert for her help. Even though everyone knows I cudduh taken her f'r real. Then again...she never seems to have troubles opening stuck jar lids like I do.

Congrats to the winners.

Not an' Athlete in Action' to be seen anywhere and I found the title of Maureen's entry offensive.

Afraid I have to agree with Fergie :-

First: Thanks for the 1st place, Paul. The sun was very harsh that day and it was very windy, making shooting photos and golf balls difficult.

fergie, we have exchanged PM's so I will make this short.

There is a group of Irish brothers and cousins here that started an annual golf tournament several years ago...and I do their annual photography. The call themselves Men in Skirts and they all wear a kilt linked to their clan. It was their title I used and I am sorry if you are offended by it.

Congratulations Maureen and lighten up, Fergie! It was a fun title and if I were a kilted golfer I would not find it offensive. As for athletes, I'd certainly class Tiger Woods as one, particularly since golf is slated to be included as an Olympic sport.

Congratulations, Maureen and Boutty, those were fast action shots.

Thank you for the third place, Paul B. I think it was a very interesting theme, although a bit difficult. Even with the young girl concentrated in her participation, there is not too much motion action in archery except when the arrows fly toward the targets, shot from a line with one hundred participants, and that action is too fast to be caught during the contest. There are many more intense moments as you can see in the pictures below: Aiming the arrow with the bow’s string fully pulled back, counting the score, staying alone in the archer line, and of course, attending to the uncle’s participation :) .

Yes, I attend to most of the Archery contests or festivals in Quito because one of my brothers and one of my sons are part of the Olympic Team of Pichincha, the province where we live. In the last Olympic Festival held here for our Independence Day (May 24) celebration, I built a small site with the pictures for the group of my son and my brother. Enjoy.

Congratulations to the winner #1 Maureen
and placings # 2 Boutty # 3 Rpolitsr
very nice shots from winners and everyone

Thank you very much for hosting and judging the challenge Paul

marie: Simple facial shot and I kept coming back to it because I could not figure out the expression. Can't tell if it is relief the run is over, pleasure it has just begun or just deep concentration. Nice capture specially if she was moving.she was in a race around the lakes..and flew past me while I was taking a shot of the lake , I panned her into it lol

I would think she was thirsty , hence the lips the way they were ? I thought her pony tail showed her speed as it was flying..showing movement
maybe running faster then her though
lol

I had a few shots from other sports but they were taken with other camera
trying out a longer lens for the first time... at the time

also the odd one with the G2 >>>
:mrgreen:http://www.pbase.com/image/23251995/original.jpg

but they were sized smaller then the 800 x and the original photos were on a very old computer which I had left into the computer store to get all the data on it onto a cd (as it does not 'do' cd's..its very old)
.....I had hoped to go down to local matches with the Pro1 sometime at the week - end but didn't get a chance.

for fun....heres a photo of my son (in black vest) in one of his hundreds (well nearly) lol of marathons all around the world. picture not taken by me

Thank you for the report, marie. I see them fine, but I’m testing this new host because Yahoo will close geocities.com on October 26 and ALL the photos that I posted here in POTN along the last 4 years will disappear in a fraction of a second. :( .
I hope it is a temporary fault of the new site.

Update:
Fixed the links. An unnecessary string ?attredirects=0 at the end of each link was the culprit.
marie, I edited the quote in your post too, hope it does not matter.

Congrats to Maureen and rpolitsr, and thank you Paul B for the duty of hosting and interesting challenge. The honorable second place is well received. :p

My shot was taken during the Commonwealth games in Melbourne. It was a final event of the table tennis Womens double between Australia and New Zealand - the Aussies won. I wish I could ask the fellow in front to duck down abit while I was taking the shot. ;)

It was a fun title and if I were a kilted golfer I would not find it offensive.

You would if you were Scottish with even a small measure of pride in your national dress.

Sounds like someone woke up with their skirt in a bunch... ;)

Maureen simply titled her photo the name of the golf tournament. If you have a problem, it should be with the creators of the tournament (your fellow Countrymen)

Nice photos everyone!

I would like to see this thread retuning to the original topic, which is photography.

Boutty, we used to play ping-pong on my father’s house. I love your photo. It is amazing how the small ball was frozen there considering the velocity of top-level players :).

no worries re the editing at all , thanks Rafael
those pictures are beautiful, love the expressions especially
I clicked to make them larger as suggested and they look terrific

only thing is I lose the page every time I close down one picture to look at another (when clicked on)
wonder is there any other way I should be doing it
but the main thing is I saw them
very very nice.
it does take a lot of concentration on everyone's part
and it shows in your pictures

regards the photo site you mention closing down
not quite the same but things happened at Pbase for a few days just over a week ago and its not quite right back on form yet but is getting there and pictures are all safe and sound
but its not because its closing down ..like you mention yours is
you can imagine how difficult it must be for these sites to keep on top of all that is involved especially with so many pictures

can you copy the photos onto a CD before the close down

I'm sure you will know whatever has to be done and will do it... if it can be done
good luck with that
it would be very sad to lose the photographs

As Maureen indicated, the "men in skirts" reference was not meant to be offensive, especially since it's what the guys call themselves.

Please respect the fact that people may view things differently than you do and may have a sense of humour about things (especially themselves) that you do not.

Congratulations to Maureen first, and to Boutty and rpolitsr, great shots everyone.
I had nothing in the bag to enter this week and no chance of seeing any athletes unfortunately. Thanks for hosting and judging Paul.
