Insurance as a non-national...in Canada

Hey,

I'm heading to Canada for the year (and probably forever if things work out!) in November, and out of curiousity...insurance.

I will be between provinces, accommodation etc until I find a suitable place to settle. Risk of equipment damage/loss/theft is far higher than leaving it at my place as I do in Ireland and rooting it out when necessary.

I don't want a chunk of cash to vanish in the event of disaster, so I would love to insure everything. I'm wondering is it the same as Car insurance, where so long as you've got the license and are ponying up for the premium...you're sorted.

I'm not an Insurance agent, but it might be best to see one when you get here (to Canada) I would think that your gear would be covered under "contents insurance" up to a certain limit when you have permanent accomodation. You could try to locate an agent in the area you will be arriving at ahead of time and e-mail them your questions. State Farm insurance comes to mind as a company with offices around the country. CAA also has insurance. You should be able to find these on the internet. Or you could try yellowpages.ca to find a local agent in the city you will be coming to.

If you are a novice and not using the gear to make money or as a business then it would be covered under contents insurance.

Bundling insurance is always more favourable....car, house (apartment) and gear. Got a business insurance last week for $15,000 in gear with a $500 deductible for $300/year....covers 2 million liability and some other stuff as well.

I'm insured for CAD$5m personally, but this deliberately does not cover my possessions.
I'll investigate when I 'hit the ground'. Panicking, not allowed to have a job organised in advance, one of the loopholes of getting such an easy Visa, otherwise it's all but a permanent-residency for simply dropping a few grand on the table...and the CHC won't let that happen.
