Went out and shot these pictures of the train that sits downtown here where I live. I don't know the name or what kind it is but, they have it sitting here and I am thinking it must be of some importants. I will have to ask and see why the train is there. Hope you like them.

Neat train. Ever since I was a little kid I've always been a fan of old locomotives. I like your pictures, however, I find the green post in the foreground somewhat distracting. Out of curiosity, what is the post and why is it there?

It's a water column. These old engines were steam-powered and used vast quantities of water in their travels. The water column was used to fill the water tank on the locomotives. The more familiar version (at least here in America) was the big water tank that used gravity to dump water into the locomotive's tank.
That is a really interesting engine. I guess the fully-enclosed cab is a concession to the cold winters in Sweden.
The 4-6-0 wheel arrangement would be called a "Ten-Wheeler" in the U.S., and this particular engine appears to be a coal-burner.
The water column is a distraction, but there's nothing that can be done about it...they're not going to move it so you can take a picture. Besides, it's historically significant as far as being a relic of the steam era, so it's not totally inappropriate for this particular image.
I've taken enough train photos to understand how hard it is to pick everything that's going to end up in the shot.

Paul, That Post looks like a water spout for filling the locomotive with the water that would be used to make the steam for propulsion of the engine. If that's what it is (and I'm pretty sure it is), then it fits right in. ;)
Dooglla, Nice shots of an old steam locomotive are always welcome here. Thanks for sharing this. :D
It would be interesting to learn a bit about it's history. ;)

Thanks all...I will try to look the history up and post it as soon as I can find someone who knows something about it. As for the sign and what it say I have to look that one up too.
Update: A little I found out about it.
It is actually a Swedish State Railroads (SJ) class B engine from 1918. It was the standard dependable workhorse until steam was phased out in the end of the 1960's.
Several class B have been preserved, and they can even be found in the US today :)

That's in great shape... Would probably still run, if anyone wanted to try.

Now that makes sense. I just did not recognize the post as a water column. I should have realized that is what it was, afterall steam engine locomotives are pretty much like compact coal-fired boilers on wheels.
And I agree, now that I know what it is for, It fits with the locomotive as the subject of the picture, and would be rather hard to move.
