I have a 480EX II. I'm considering purchasing a 580EX II, but I'm curious about something. If I mount a 580 to my camera, can I trigger the 480, off camera, without firing the 580? I am considering this combination instead of a speedlite remote flash controller because, of course, for the marginal cost difference I would get a second flash.

Your thoughts are my inspiration.

Are you sure you have a 480 EX II? I think Canon did make a 480 at one point, but given that you put "EX II" after it, I will for a moment assume you mean the 430 EX II.

If so, then yes. You can trigger the 430 EX II remotely using your 580 without firing the 580.

Assuming you meant the 430ex, you certainly can.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, you folks were right, I have a 430EX II and understanding that the 580EX II can be fired, only if told to, is truly helpful.

Thanks again.

Even though you can set it so the 580 does not fire and triggers the 430 you WILL see the 580 fire, but do not be alarmed, this flash you see will be the preflash and instructions to the 430 on how to fire. Many a photographer have lost hair trying to figure out why they see the master fire when they tell it not too.
