I've read alot of the archived posts and I have measured the flash on a voltage meter. I get a reading of 8.52v and I did it several times. I planned on using my old Vivitar 285 on a lightstand OFF of the camera. I have a PC cord to connect the flash to the camera and will use AA batteries for power for now. I know it's not the 285HV or I wouldn't be asking but do you think this flash is usable even if it reads over 6v and since I am NOT using it on the hotshoe of my 30D? I have this left over from my film days and it would be some good off camera light. I know there are some 285 users out there.

I wouldnt risk it...I seem to remember its fine using a PC cord, but I'm not sure so I still wouldnt risk it.

Why not get a Wein Safe Sync? No worries then.

For the price of a wein safe sync you can get a set of ebay triggers and lose the cord altogether.

What camera do you have?. Most canons are rated for 250V on the hotshoe, and I seriously doubt that even those specced at 6V will be damaged by 8.5V

Old post but it turns out it worked. I bartered for a pair of ebay triggers and it works. I get flash power without being connected to my camera at all. So simple. Thank you.
