I am also shooting with 70-200L IS 2.8. I love it. I see in your photos something familiar in mine. The images are nice and clear and sharp with the exception of the fastest moving object. In these as well as mine it is the hands. Should this be expected or is there a solution to it.

Yes, this was in Boulder, CO.
Settings for the first one were:
Canon EOS 20D 5/28/2005 9:38:45 AM 1/1000 f 3.5 ISO 100 70.0 - 200.0 mm @ 140.0 mm
The second one was:
Canon EOS 20D 5/28/2005 2:30:54 PM 1/1000 f 4.0 ISO 100 70.0 - 200.0 mm @ 70.0 mm

You can certainly shoot at faster shutter rates, these were both at 1/1000, depending on the light etc... That would freeze the motion even more.

AWP, I just learning/re-learning myself. This is my first serious photography in about 6 years or so. I've been waiting on the prices and capability of the digital slrs to get there and I'm having a blast learning this camera and re-learning photography.
These were both shot in shutter priority mode.
Best Wishes,

The other thing you ought to look at is if you are using a monopod with it as well When I got mine rushed out to one of my favorite locations and shot off about 50 shots. When I got back all excited I found that at least 50% were not as sharp as I had expected. I have another larger lens I always support with something - but this lens is surely would need that. Then I went and did a LaCrosse shoot which I did use the monopod with - and all of a sudden 85% - 90% were technically perfect.... Don't underestimate how being extremely stable can be. IS can help a lot - but it is no replacement for shooting off of a stable platform. Give it a try - you may be surprised. Cheers!

Thanks TONS! for the help!!!.......I shot some the other day of my daughters game and them came out pretty clear and nice color but no where near as nice as yours.
I will get a monopod and should I shoot with the Av set to f4.0 or f2.8, and I assume that the ISO 100 will bring out the color better?

Keeping the ISO down will help mostly with the noise level produced by the sensor - all those little pixels that seem not to be the right colour. The higher you go - particularly north of 800 - it becomes more noticable. But don't be obsessed with keeping ISO at 100... it is more important to have a crisp clean capture. Keep the shutter speed up high and don't over expose. Almost everthing else you can deal with in post production environment.... the more you shoot - the more you know - the lest post work needed - if any. Cheers.

The first pic is a good idea, but wrong side. you have her shoulder and back rather than her expression.

What shooting mode were you using?
And with that? why aren't you shooting at f/2.8? Take advantage of that. In sports, you generally want to single out the player from the bg. The 2.8 gives you that advantage.

the 70-200 is good for most close infield shots, forget outfield in most situations, i find it mose useful behind home plat and on top of the dugout from 1st and 3rd...batting is tricky, you can get a good frame but the angle is weird...
but shooting the pitcher from home place, keeping the catcher and batter in view, or just the pitcher, perfect focal lengths.

Anyone out there can tell me if it will be good for me to force the ISO on my Canon EOS 20D to its maximum above 1600 when shooting night shoots in a football game? I have the Canon EF 70-200 2.8L IS USM lens, and any suggestions for using the flash? would I need to use the flash? I have the Canon 580EX Speedlite. Also what adjustments would I need to do in shutter speed if I use the Canon 2x II Extender EF- Autofocus with the above lens and shooting also football games in the night, the use of this xtender would require the use of the flash? any idea what the right shutter speed would be? and ISO?

Great pics!! I have had the same lens for 5 days now, loving it also.
Have a question though, are you shooting behind the fence, did you have your camera right on the fence? Is it the low ISO setting or the low aperture?
I remember years ago the trick to it, but can't remember.?

No these were actually from the sidelines. I've been checking with the coaches and umpires before the game and have been lucky enough to have them let me shoot from the sidelines. (The lens tends to intimidate them I think. :) )

Yep, I think so too, on the intimidating part... I used mine last night at sons ballgame, and I certainly felt the eyes......it is certainly a sizey lens.

Thanks Kenyc, OK........this first pic was taken with 20D and the kit lens 17-85 IS USM lens from the 3rd base dugout. The other was taken with a 70-200mm L IS. What my question is........How can I get my photo's to come out as crisp and clean with nice color as the first ones posted?
