This was an event that my Mother was competing in. I decided to take a trip back to take some photos! I've never shot this type of event. I really liked the swimmers coming out of the water, some slow shutters speeds w/a flash shot on the cyclists, and found the photos of the running kind of boring. Any suggestions on what types of shots work well with this subject would be appreciated!

I like the tightly cropped water shots. They are very hard to expose correctly especially when 60% of people wear all black and 30% wear all white!

I'm not really a fan of the blurred biking shots, but that's just me. I think a lower perspective and cleaner background would help.

During triathlons I tend to use my 70-200 pegged at 200 2.8 to get some good subject isolation with clean backgrounds.

*I'd still be open for more suggestions in that thread!

+1

Walk 50 ft up the street and find a spot where there's no car parking and you just have bushes or trees as a back drop. ;)

Nice pics!

I enjoy doing triathlons, so that's my perspective. I agree with the above. I've bought my race pictures and I think the non-blurred backgrounds are most common and what I like. It's also nice to get a picture of the wave start and everyone swimming. Finish line pics are always fun!

Oh, the run from the swim to the bike is also a classic place to snap pics :)

I hear you, I was scoping out some better areas, but there was nothing for quite a distance without the cars... I was shooting for photos of my mom and didn't want to miss her. If this was a paid gig I'd have definitely made the hike! lol.

Thanks for the suggestions! After visiting a few sites after the event (I had no real reference to shots from the sport before the event) I do realize that the panning-slow shutter shots are not what's desired by the cyclists.

Great suggestions so far... I appreciate it!

Keep it coming!

Nice shots...

Was this the event in Mission Viejo a couple of weeks ago? I saw some of it, but mostly because I was trying to find a way around it to get to the little league fields. :-)

A spot I like to shoot is at a watering station during the run portion. Runners are dumping glasses of water over their heads or trying to run and drink at the same time. Can make for some interesting pics.

Agreed, the 1st one was good. The biking shot wasn't my favorite.
