Canon 430exII mad expensive but has built in slave?

SO basically i want to trigger 1-2 flashes from about 100ft away. i shoot in daylight and at night.

Snowboard/ski photography... hmm.. never done it. I do shoot skateboarding though. Similar yet different. I use a paul buff set-up 3 b800s and cybersyncs. About 1G but def worth your money. The snow will give you a f-stop or 2, compared to cement, so you might go with b400s if youre on a tight budget., depending on how far away your subject is.. Just a tough secnario to shoot without practice and/or more info about what you are shooting. PW's are expensive, you might try using your 430ex with a ST-E2. Even then, I don't see this being bright enough to illuminate what you're trying to capture... The bottom line is, is that if you are doing this more than once and making money off of it i would invest in flash head units with a remote trigger system. Basic flash (430ex) just wont be effective IMO. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you will spend just as much buying a few 430ex + 580ex + ST-E2 as you will buying 2 flash heads with a remote trigger system. I've been doing this for less than 1 year so if anyone can tell you different please note that.

Could you describe a typical scenario in which you plan to shoot? How far away from the action will you be? Will you shoot in varying lighting conditions?

These get good reviews. I'm pretty close to ordering a set myself. Pick up a lightstand/umbrella (or other modifier) and you'll be set!

If I were going to use wireless triggers I wouldnt get the canon flash. THey are great too much money for features you wont use. Look at the vivitar 285's Half the price of the canon, powerful, and durable as heck.

typical senerio would be me about 100ft from the rider with a 70-200.
flash would need to fire at the snowboarder.
i shoot in daylight and at night.

i took everyones advice and im looking at the vivitar 285hv, im a little lost still when it comes to triggering.

wein makes a Combination Slave and Foot for Vivitar 283 & 285 Flashes
is this what i need for remote flashing?

SORRY IM A N00B

I think that Wein is just an optical slave. Long story short, don't get it.

I recommend a Yongnuo RF-602 trigger set (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.28511) with a LumoPro LP120 flash (http://www.mpex.com/browse.cfm/4,12311.html) along with a lightstand (http://www.mpex.com/browse.cfm/4,11667.html) and bracket (http://www.mpex.com/browse.cfm/4,4721.html). I don't think you need an umbrella, you need as much power as possible for action shots.

So here you go:
LumoPro LP120 Flash
Yongnuo RF-602
Stand
Bracket

And I would suggest putting the flash on the stand in a location under the ski-er. Probably at like a 45 degree angle.

has anyone bought the lighting package on midwest photo exchange?
http://www.mpex.com/browse.cfm/4,12322,1,0,0.html
it comes with
two lumopro flashes
two stands
two umbrellas
gels
cactus v4s
other stuff too (cases, ties...)

is this a good option?
