The legend has it that the railroad company built this bridge upside down over the Erie Canal to block shipping boats, and ultimately put the canal operators out of business. It was probably just less expensive to build this way. The bridge is still in use today.

This is an inverted Howe Truss bridge. It was not unusual for railroads to build them in this manner over gaps that were deep enough to accommodate the structure underneath the tracks. I suppose the advantages were elimination of problems with vertical clearances and ease of maintenance.
