So I am shooting a fashion/runway show for a local college's fashion department. I just relocated out to this city and don't know many people yet. I figured this would be a good place for me to do some advertising and start getting my name out.

From shows I have shot in the past it is a bit hard to get out and chat people up as much as I would like because, essentially, you are there to do a job first, and promote yourself second. Any ideas on things I could do to grab some publicity?.. without acting like Kanye West? ;) The producer of the show seems to be pretty cooperative with me, so I'm not worried about pressing her a bit for a favor or two. Just not sure which or what favors would be in my best interest to try her for.

All I have thus far is setting out some business cards. Also thinking of having my business name printed onto the back of the collar (wearing it under a sweater, that that is all that shows.) That way I still am dressed presentably, and fashionably :) while advertising myself in a non loud and obnoxious way.

Are you serious? That sounds like the tackiest thing i have ever heard...

That sounds like the tackiest thing i have ever heard... True, but aren't those the things that get people noticed? As in, "There's no such thing as bad publicity". ;)
You can get away with a lot of things while you're in college, so it might be worth a try. Still, I wouldn't do it that way at that event. Maybe put a large print of your best shot on an easel somewhere that people will pass by with some business cards.

Before you shoot this thing, talk to the lighting guy & see if he will punch up the lighting for you.

You could always do what the boxers do and tattoo it across your chest and go shirtless. That will get plenty of publicity.

How about getting a custom camera strap printed, with your name on it?

Headband? Hat?

But seriously, the best thing you can do is take really great shots and work with the organizer so that they use some of them on their website and provide a link to yours.

Beyond that, if there is someplace to set up a tabletop display, put out a sign up sheet where people can provide their email addresses, promising that they'll be the first to be notified when the images go up online.

The organizer might have a mailing or emailing list of participants and audience, too.

Besides that, patience.... ;)

It's for the college fashion department? First thing I would consider doing would be to go talk to the department. Do they have an office with bulletin board space? Do they have a weekly/monthly announcement that they send out? It may be as simple as asking if they wouldn't mind you putting up a few 8.5"x11" announcements about Jadam Photography's coverage of whatever the name of their event is, or having them drop your name in their regular announcements.

Take advantage of what the people involved in the show are bound to see on a regular basis. That's always better than trying to make a big impression on someone who is stressed, under pressure, and on a tight schedule during the event itself.
