Got it from Design Outpost (http://www.designoutpost.com/) which I think is a great place if you don't have a concept of what you want and so want lots of different ideas.

I didn't like our logo that much at the start but since its now on our website, blog, shirts, cards, towels, fav icons on websites, iphone icons and everything else in our business I really like it.... feels like it fits.

My only advice when getting a logo is find something that works in black and white as well as color, inevitably you will need to use it in black and white even if it starts out life as a colored logo like ours did.

Please do not use either of these services, they both are Spec work sites.

Basically a bunch of people do work for free and only one gets anything out of it, and it's bad for the design community.

Imagine having 5 photographers, you all have to do a wedding shoot, and the client picks whichever one they want and you get paid nothing if you don't get picked. Would you welcome that type of environment? Designers don't like it either.

pitrow

Designers don't like it either.

then I'd have to ask, why are so many of them there and why are they submitting work? If it's really that bad for them, then they wouldn't be there and/or wouldn't waste their time on it.

Because they aren't designers. At least they don't work in the business, likely don't hold a degree in it. Most would either be students, or those who just do it in their spare time. I do web and graphic design but only on occasion, just not in a professional capacity.

The people there are not really working with you - they are just submitting a ton of logos and stuff and hoping you like one. It's not taking into consideration your business - it's not tailored to your business like a design firm would do. Branding is a big thing, but you're not really getting that type of service with these places. You just get a logo. And while it may look good, it probably won't communicate anything about your business like one from a professional designer who takes a look at your business as a whole and works to design things that fit.

So you're saying no one should hire you for their web or logo design, right? You're doing it just in your spare time like the spec folks.

It worked for tim. And I'm sure it worked for many others. The solo designer I chose for mine was a student at the time. She wasn't an out and out full time professional. You also don't know for sure that these spec designers aren't taking into account your business, just as you can't be sure that a professional doesn't have an ego so big that he designs something you definitely don't want but insists that it's what you need.

Phil Knight also used a student for the Swoosh.

OdiN1701
15th of October 2009 (Thu), 13:35
If someone wants to hire me to do web or logo work, that's fine. I do it in my spare time, and make some extra here and there. But it's not on a speculative basis. I get paid for my work or I don't work. Simple as that. Completely different.

Obviously you don't just hire someone by throwing a dart at a phone book. You setup interviews to review portfolios and see if you work well with someone, etc. Then you pick someone, and you can let the huge ego guy have his huge ego but no project to work on.

I'm not saying don't hire someone in school or without a degree or that just does it in spare time. I'm just saying hire someone you like with a portfolio you like instead of a nameless, faceless group of people whom you've never met and have no idea whether they care about the work or just the cash. A designer will get something that you like, that also is tailored to your business, unlike most spec work. Picking something you like out of 200 logos seems like a good idea, but it really isn't. You may like a logo, but there may be problems with it and you could get better service from working with a single designer who understands the way ads and brands and such need to be handled.

cdifoto
15th of October 2009 (Thu), 13:46
Okay, since we're making broad, sweeping, and ultimately unfair generalizations:

I would venture to say it's the spec guys who are doing it because they love it more so than the independent folks. After all, they're designing without guarantee of income while the independent guy won't even get out of bed without being paid.

you may not, but there's probably people out there that would.

Let's flip that one around a bit. I'm going to the coast to shoot some landscapes this weekend. There's no guarantee of payment. I'm going to spend a lot of my own money and time to get a few good pictures that may or may not sell as fine art. I guess I shouldn't go because I have no one financing me and guaranteeing that they'll buy my work huh?

That's technically "spec" work too... so I guess you're against pretty much every photographer on here except those that do studio work and get contracts in advance. Most every landscape, sports, wildlife, etc. photographer (unless they're working for a publication) is working on spec.

OdiN1701
15th of October 2009 (Thu), 14:15
And you get what you pay for in that situation.

Landscapes however, is entirely different. Fine art is not something usually comissioned or done for hire.

look in their portfolio. A lot of the people are from overseas. This is just a case of globalization. Someone in a poor country will work hard for $250 US dollars. Also it looks like a lot of businesses in countries where there are not design firms are using this site. Its a crap shoot though since you only get what people are willing to do. A serious person will pay more, but get to work with a designer that will not stop until the client is satisfied.

" likely don't hold a degree in it."

I dont hold a degree in construction but I've made a pretty good living at it to this point. You get what you put into it. Just like I plan to make a decent living at sports photography. If your no good or not up to par you wont make it I can accept that. I shoot on spec all the time at events I take thousands of photos that dont sell. Really good ones sometime. Dont kill entrepreneuralship.(sp)
Dont take this personal because I dont mean it to be but, some of those "Designers" with degrees may look at you (not doing it professionaly) as some union construction companys have looked at me becuse I am not, and do not belive in unions. (I know crazy huh?) They call them scabs. Thats OK I got thick skin and my bills are paid at least at this point. Were not all cut from the same cloth. I respect your opinon and way of doing things please dont hate others for doing it thier way.

Most would either be students, or those who just do it in their spare time. I do web and graphic design but only on occasion, just not in a professional capacity.

"You just get a logo. And while it may look good, it probably won't communicate anything about your business"

I think I am smart enough to know what I like without the need for a "Designer" to tell me what I like or need. Thanks for looking out for me though.

I use the {ab} for watermarking my images ( for web showing) :)

ive tried the Scripty font in the box for it, and it just looks oddly placed. I figured I could use that as a small logo for certian paperwork, or a seal later. I just got logo happy haha.
