Hi
I am new to photography and beginning to take HS football photos. I currently have a Canon T1i with a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens, and Canon 430 EX II flash. I am not sure yet if I will be able to use the flash but any advice for me would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Boarder,
A few things. First, welcome to POTN. You've come to the right spot on the 'net to learn about shooting HS football. Second, you posted in "Photo Sharing" section. There is a Talk About Sports (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=117) section. That's the best place to post your questions. Second, this has been discussed countless times. Also, at the bottom of each thread is a "Similar Threads" section listing, well, similar threads. Also, if you search HS football, I'm sure you'll find exactly what you're looking for. HS football is a heavily discussed topic here and you will find so much reading, it'll make your head spin. I'm not trying to be harsh, just pointing out a few things.
Now, on to the topic at hand. If you're shooting daytime football, the setup you have will be sufficient. You might find it lacking at night, however. You'll want to keep your shutter speed relatively high to eliminate motion blur (1/800th+). I would recommend you shoot in Av (aperture value) mode. I would set your aperture to the widest it will go. Since you're using a variable aperture (f/3.5-5.6) lens, I would keep it at f/5.6 and let it stay there. Adjust your iso to keep your shutter speeds above 1/800th. Hope this helps.
