I have a 28-105 non-USM POS plastic mount kit lens.
Personally I get little satisfaction hands on with lens first.
With the L you will get sharper detail and brighter more vivid colors.
A good picture is still a good picture, you will just have a better "L" quality picture.
In addition L lenses sometimes have a lower avail aperture (wide open) which will let you run faster shutter speeds in lower light situations or if you want to play more w/ depth of field.
L's also tend to have better constructions and some have weather sealing for pro bodies.
IMO any normal zoom is better then Canon kit lenses, I use a Sigma 18-125 DC at the Moment instead of a kit lens. One day I'll justify an L lens....a buddy of mine uses a 28-70L (discontinued) a very nice lens, I can only dream.
