Can anyone id this bird for me? I'm new to birding, and I'm having a hard time identifying some of these online. Also, can someone recommend a good online reference?

That's a good-looking American robin - turdus migratorius.
With a little practice, this is a very good reference:

Yep, thats what he is alright.
That is a very good pic-a little different pose than the norm.

It sure is, very common around here. I am no avid bird watcher but would add it looks like a young (speckeled breast) and a female (greyish head and tail, male more black). Could be wrong, just a guess.

Nice shot. I think something's spooked him, don't they raise their tail feathers like that when there's a predator around?

Nice shot. I think something's spooked him, don't they raise their tail feathers like that when there's a predator around?HAHAHAHAHA. Good call. I was going to mention that he started acting like that when he heard the 20D's mirror slap. Tilting his head and looking around like "What the heck is that extremely loud noise". It was dead quiet when I was taking those shots.

Nice clear shot Phil. I only saw it once in Houston. Was that taken with your Sigma 500mm?

Yes, it was the 500/4.5 from about 50 feet away. It's not a 100% crop, but it's pretty close.

There are thousands of these birds around my home from April to October. Also known as the Robin Redbreast. (Dont ask me why they call it that?) LOL....
Nice picture though.
