Next Lens?

Hi, all.

My friend (who loans me her 20D) asked me which lens should she get next?

She already has:
50 (Nifty Fifty)
35-80
18-55
75-300 (film)
(None are L series)

She has no clear idea where her interests lie just yet (probably because I've been using the camera and she hasn't had a chance to play with it yet...shame on me!!!). She has great coverage (with some overlap, but whatever) up to 300. But what comes next?

I was thinking something for macro, or for landscape, but I don't know which to recommend. Or should she just go larger, to the 500? Good grief, I just don't know.

Thanks for your answers, and please elaborate (no need for a single sentence...:lol:;)) if you want to. I'm still such a newbie that I can't figure out which would be the next best lens for her.

I think if it were me I would start increasing the quality! Slowly get some of those L lenses. I wish I had the money to.

Until she has a problem with what she has now i'd suggest she keep her money in her pocket. She's well covered from 18-300mm, the lenses will all do a reasonable job, unless she's dissatisfied there's no need to upgrade. Don't get caught up in the gear lust, you can make great photos with a $300 point and shoot.

If she has not had a chance to really use what she has,. then there is little for her to base her next purchase on..

ie: stop thinking about getting stuff and start thinking about (and doing) more shooting! :)

Here's my suggestion... :)

Go back to her and tell her she doesn't need another lens.
And she doesn't need L glass
She probably needs to do more photography to identify a need for another lens before buying one (I know, that means giving the camera back... ;) )

If she is thinking of macro I suggest she drops $100 on some extension tubes to see if they will get used. I did that and realised that I don;t do that much macro work - certianly not enough to justify a macro lens at this time.
Maybe she would benefit from a decent flashgun if she doesn't have one already...

Why is she looking to buy lenses when she doesn't know what she's interested in?
Go TAKE PICTURES!

Get to know each individual focal length and develop interests THEN you will have a much better idea of what lenses to get

-unless it's just to show off in which ccase get the most expensive lenses you can
