I have always used a regular CD-R to put pictures on.... I went to the store last night and the sales person said DVD would be better... Price was about the same.

What is the difference and which is better?

DVD for sure. A regular CD only has 700MB of space, where a regular DVD has 4.7GB.

The only reason I buy CDs nowadays is incase I want to make a music CD. DVDs I find are usually cheaper (when I buy a 50pack spindle). For pictures and particularly if you want to backup RAW files DVDs will be much better.

I would rather use CDs because DVDs have way shorter lifespan. I don't keep RAWs, so space is not an issue.
I have pictures on two different hard drive and burn out the ones that I think are more important.

If the space is not an issue, the manufacturers do tell us that their CDs are more stable than their DVDs.
