View Full Version : Official poll: There WILL or WILL NOT be a 60D?

I went to the local camera store to check out if they had any 7Ds in stock. Nope.. sold out. I talked with the sales people there and they said that there will be NO 60d. The salesman said a 60d would be "a step backwards." I mentioned that I think there will be one, bascially a stripped down version of the 7D (less weather sealing, 50D's AF system but with the IQ of the 7D). Something that would compete with the D90 with the $500+ price difference of the 7D vs current 50D.
It makes sense to me.
We both agreed that if it would come out it would not be for another year or so (duh!)..
That salesman also told me the 7D had better AF then the 1D and more weather sealing as well.. dunno about that, sounded like he was trying to sweet talk me into buying one lol.
Do you think Canon will just stick with the current lineup (7D replacing the 50D) or will they continue to offer more DSLRs to complete with NIkon's lineup?

As discussed many times already - Canon for sure will have a camera between the Rebels and the 7D.
What's unknown at this time is whether it will be spec'd closer to the 7D or the Rebels.
My bet is on a more consumer-friendly model.

You won't get your wish. Video adds no cost to the camera as its software driven. Really whats the big deal if it has video, if its no use to you, don't use it. So if there is a 60D on the horizon it will be coming with video, like it or not.

I basically want the 60d have improvements over the 50d- improved IQ (same as the 7D), built in flash transmitter, video (use it or not, it doesn't cost anything to make), 6fps as the current 50d. All in a package priced the same or lower as the 50d.

There will be a 60D, it will have video, and its feature-set will be somewhere in between the 50D and the 7D. I am not sure exactly what Canon intends to include as far as the features and video options go. It should be priced around USD$1200-$1300 body-only.

That is actually what I am looking for as my next step up from the Rebel XSi (VIDEO!, better fps, and integrated flash controller). 12 MP has been plenty for what I do, but those other features would come in handy in how I shoot from time-to-time.
Snobs that can't stomach video in a DSLR for whatever strained reasoning can just poke a pinhole in a cardboard box once their current camera dies.

LOL I forgot to say what I voted for. Yeah, I'm there too. The 7D is much more interesting to me (and the 1DIV).
7D is pretty nice BTW. I tried one yesterday. Seems solid and the viewfinder looks very special. However, I find it a touch confusing on how to change the AF settings (I'd have to go to the manual for that).

Right.
But for simplicity's sake, I thought it made sense to continue naming the full frame cameras with a single numeral and the crop bodies with two. Not a huge deal, but more logical in my mind. Besides, the difference between the 1D series and 5D is greater than the difference between the 7D/xxD cameras don't you think? And therefore didn't really warrant new model line nomenclature? I'm not knocking the 7D at all, and I'm not trying to make a big deal out of this, but IMHO it wasn't leaps and bounds ahead of the xxD series. I'm talking in terms of build, speed, weather sealing, integrated vertical grip, and so on.
Great camera, but it didn't rewrite the book like the 5D. If the 5D hadn't brought full frame sensors to the masses, it wouldn't have been a huge deal either.

Great camera, but it didn't rewrite the book like the 5D. If the 5D hadn't brought full frame sensors to the masses, it wouldn't have been a huge deal either.I agree with what you are saying, that the 7D is not leaps and bounds ahead of the xxD series and did not rewrite the book like the 5D. But that was not Canon's intent. Canon wanted to bridge a gap between the xxD series and the 1D series (as far as crops are concerned), or between the xxD series and the 5D MkII (if you think of the EOS lineup as purely linear). And that is the key word, "bridge". Before the 7D, Canon did not have anything at the same level as Nikon's D300. Now it does. It also gives xxD users an additional upgrade option that is not too harsh on the wallet.
As for the naming conventions, don't forget that the 1D is a 1.3x crop, while the 1Ds and 5D series are full frame. So already single digits did not all mean full frame. There are speculations that there will be a 3D FF camera in the future. Whether it is set above or below the 5D series (in the former and likely case of above, the 5D series would become the pro-sumer level FF, and the 3D would be the new mid-range/semi-pro FF, below the flagship 1Ds), and whether this is even true at all, remains to be seen. One thing that is a little more certain, since Canon has hinted at it, is that the xxD line will continue, with the 60D next in line. This makes sense. Adding a 7D as a bridge would be nullified if the xxD line was discontinued, as yet another gap would be created, between the xxxD Rebels and the 7D.
And consider the price points (I'll list in USD $, Canon starting MSRP), starting from the bottom:
xxxxD/Rebel (entry) - $500-$600
xxxD/Rebel (consumer) - $800-$900
xxD (pro-sumer) - $1100-$1200
7D series (mid-range/semi-pro crop) - $1700
5D series (mid-range/semi-pro FF) - $2700
1D series (flagship/professional crop) - $4000-$5000
1Ds series (flagship/professional FF) - $7000Add to this a potential 3D to take the 5D's place as the mid-range/semi-pro FF for around $3000 and push down the 5D to pro-sumer FF at about $2200-$2500, and this would give Canon a lineup to be reckoned with for the competition. It also adds more "steps in the ladder", more steps in the EOS lineup, giving consumers more options to upgrade – both in terms of having more camera choices and smaller price differences between each camera series – and making it easier for them to stick with Canon, thus promoting brand loyalty.
Personally, I don't care about the naming conventions. If Canon started giving a name to each series, Howitzer, Dominator, Explorer, I would find it utterly silly, but I wouldn't care, for example, that Dominator should be above Explorer but Canon did not name them in this order. Or, if Canon decided to invert the naming convention, going from low digit numbers for entry level all the way through high digit numbers for their flagship cameras, I could care less as well.
What I am trying to say is that the 5D being a series on its own, the 7D being a series on its own, and potentially the 3D being a series on its own while already existing series are continuing, they need new names. Based on Canon's marketing strategy thus far, the 7D could not have possibly be named the 60D or any other form of xxD. IF Canon had decided that yes, this new camera we are working on is the direct successor to the 50D, then it would make perfect sense to call it 60D or another xxD. But that is not the case. There will be a 60D that will be a completely different camera than the 7D, and the 7D is the first camera in a brand new line, just as the first 5D was a few years back, before its successor, the 5D MkII arrived. We are going to see a 7D MkII down the road as well.
And on that note, if we ever see a 3D, there will still be a 5D MkIII. But the same old naming debate is going to arise as long as both cameras are not announced at the same time!

The 7D has mRAW (is that what's it's called)? So you don't need to use the full MP all the time.
I often use sRAW1 on my 5DII (make it about 10MP instead of 21MP) saves space on the HDD for stuff I don't need to print big or crop a lot.

Someone in Canon went insane.
If they were going to do that, the 7D (and the 5DII which has similar AF to the XXD series) wouldn't make sense. IMHO they'll only make another (non 1Ds or 5D series) FF body if it's got good AF (7D style) and it's called a 3D.

I don't think it would be any smaller, considering the 5D was bigger then the 30D (with no reason for it to be bigger other then the larger sensor).
If they make the 5Dmk3 with improved weather sealing, better AF and more "7D' like then they could make a stripped down budget FF camera, sorta like how the 400D is to the 1000D.

Perhaps they would use an EVF to get the FF sensor shoehorned into a Rebel sized body. Without a mirror, you could do all sorts of things with the space made available... (Personally, I'd be happy with a stripped down 7D in 1.6x)
