Hi

I loved snapping tightly cropped photos of birds, insects and animals plus the occassional humans.

Sample shots (http://photobucket.com/albums/v258/Snoopy88/?start=all)

Owned the 100-400L and was wondering would a 1.4X or 2X be a worth while investment ? I still want the IS function

Also, what about non Canon telecon. Any good ?

Will be in HK next week and would be time to have a look at the telecon and the 70-200L F4.

Comments appreciated.

Cheers

Thanks Tommy, this is great help.

Still keen to hear from the forumers who used the 100-400L + TC setup.

Anyone ?

OK, you will loose AFon your 300D if you stick either tele convertor onto the rig, but you will still benefit from IS.

You will retain IS but loose auto focus.

If the bird, insect or animal is stationary and you have time to focus manually I found it OK.
I would stick with Canons TC.

The new Tamron SP AF 1.4X is very good but relatively expensive for a third party extender (although about 40% cheaper than the Canon). Not used with a 100-400 but with a 70-200 F4L. Works well but you loose some sharpness and about 10% in image quality. I imagine the results should be similar with 100-400 although you can not avoid loosing AF with a 100-400 (well actually it seems that you can avoid loosing AF by taping some of the pins but this is not recommended). Hope that helps.
