I got away with a very cheap lens on my old film camera, I think it was like a 28-85 or something along those lines.

If I were to do it all over, I'd bring a wide angle to standard (your 17-40L) to walk around with and the 70-200 for some of the other photos.

Do you have a limitation on room? Because if not, and you plan on going into any pubs with the potential to see any live music, I'd being the 50 1.4 and 28 2.8 as well.

Just my opinion, take it for what its worth.

Anything you can fit. Back in 1983 I took a 24mm, 50mm, 85mm, 135mm and 200mm (at the time I didn't think zooms were worth a pile of dung). If you can cover the 24mm to 300mm range you'll be happy. Also, many of my favorite shots were in old abandoned castles (very low light) so take a fast lens. It's also good on those dark misty Irish days. I probably used the 50mm the most, then the 24mm. But the longer reach is nice at times. So, as I said before, anything you can fit. :)

Take something that will still give a sharp picture after a couple of pints of Stout! :D
All kidding aside, a combination of the 16-35/2.8 or 24-70/2.8 and 70-200/2.8 or 4 will cover most shots with reasonable weight and bulk.

Sell every thing except the 50 f1.4 and use the proceeds to buy a 70-300 DO IS and a 24-70 f2.8L.

You will be traveling smarter and lighter.

Living in Ireland I don't know why you would bring anything any different here than anywhere else! But I would recomend 17-40 & 50/1.4 if you are are travelling light and add the 70-200L if you can. I hope you have a great visit. When are you coming? the weather is supposed to be great for the next week.
