OK, so I read some posts earlier that convinced me to take the focus lock off the shutter button and put it on the * button. Having done that, and being used to it, I now notice with my 420EX that I can't fire off the pre-flash for evaluative flash exposure.
Am I correct in saying that if you want to press the * button to do an evaluative first flash, you need to disable CF4 and set it back to 0 so * isn't used for focus?

i think you are referring to the preflash used for flash exposure lock (FEL)?
i know on the 10D, you can reassign the assist button to fire FEL when the * is assigned to AF (CF13/04). I can't seem to find a similar custom function to do this on the XT or the 20D. maybe owners of these two models can help?

I am in exactly the same spot with my 20D. I've set CF4-1, and no longer have Flash Exposure Lock.
I use FEL when using my Sigma 500 super in manual slave mode - it fires when it sees a flash, so without FEL it fires on the preflash and then is exhausted when the main flash goes off for the exposure. FEL gets it to fire on the modeling flash, allows time to recharge, and then there's only a single flash when taking the picture.

Yeah, the preflash for FEL is what I'm talking about.
That really sucks... Just after using the * is second nature for focus... now I have to flip flop between the settings depending if I'm using a flash or not.

Anybody else?
Is there any way around this with the XT?
