Okay...I just got my 20D a couple of weeks ago and it seems as if every photo that I have taken has a spot on them in the same place. I have cleaned the lens and the UV filter but it is still there. I just shot a ton of photos and some are amazing but they all have this spot. Any idea what it could be?

Desperately seeking help.

Search the forum for 'dust on the sensor' :D

Best regards,

usually it's just dust on the sensor (well, on the filter in front of the sensor, technically). that's assuming if it's a blurry edged roundish spot. it usually becomes more noticeable if you stop down the lens (f16). you can search the forums for sensor cleaning.

on the other hand, if it's just a pixel that's always the same color, then it's a dead/stuck pixel in the sensor.

alex....it seems more like a blurry edged roundish spot. I'll search the forum for sensor cleaning. Thanks. Is it difficult?

A Giotto's rocket blower works to remove the spots 90% of the time, otherwise you need sensor swabs. A rocket blower is a rubber bulb blower that you squeeze to shoot air across the sensor filters to blow the dust off. Don't use compressed air, and don't try to blow into the front with your mouth which will just make it worse.

Phillip,

Thanks for the suggestion. I think that I will be headed to B&H tomorrow morning. Pretty frustrating considering the photos that I shot today are not screwed unless I want to do a ton of PS work. I guess now I need to read on how to actually get to the sensor to clean it.

It's actually really simple. It's just a menu option ("Sensor clean" I think). I just point the front of the camera down, give it a few good blasts with the rocket blower and test it out.

A good test is a manual exposure of the clear blue sky at f/22. Take that photo into Photoshop and do auto levels on it, and all the dust will be clearly shown. But don't freak out like I did when I first did this test, because you only need to worry about the darkest spots, as most of them will not be noticeable in your pictures.

If that does not solve the problem read this thread about sensor faults.

Lynn just be glad you can go to B&H on a whim :) I had to travel from Dallas just to visit (was there on business in beautiful Secaucus, NJ at a super secret datacenter...) Man I love NYC in the spring!

I had the same problem - they would not clean away and i sent it back to canon, they replaced the snesor as mine had dead spots. No charge except for shipping, it only took about 10 days door to door.

Adam,

It is a blessing to have this in the city. Soemtimes I forget the holiday schedule and it closes for a couple of weeks. That kills me. It's like having your presents setting under the tree and having to wait to open them. I realize that this is an odd comparison considering I am drawing a parallel to a Christian holiday waiting period to a Jewish holiday vacation. Hey, what can you do? That's all I've got. I'll be hear the rest of the week. Don't forget to try the veal and tip your waitresses.

snapper...what did your spots look like? Mine look like fuzzy grey circle type shapes.

Dang! If B&H was close enough for me to walk into, my wife would never see me at home.
