I just bought a 40D from a member here (hasn't arrived) and I'm trying to prepare for its arrival. I have an XSi currently and I am wondering is the quick release plate from my XSi going to fit on the 40D or do they have different thread sizes? Thanks.

I'd go so far as to say that if you buy another Canon, indeed any other mainstream DSLR, and the mounting thread is not of the same size there's something wrong.
Of much greater import, you will greatly enjoy your 40D and be astonished at how much better it is than your XS1/400D.

Almost all EOS-sized (or smaller) cameras use the 1/4-20 thread size for the tripod sockets (if equipped with one - some point-n-shoots are not so equipped, from what I have heard).

The tripod socket screw size (1/4 X 20) is the same for virtually all DSLR cameras and generic quick release plates are interchangeable.
Where you get into problems is the camera specific plates such as the Really Right Stuff and KIRK "L" plates. These plates fit the contours of the camera. And may not be interchangeable.

The "L" plates on an Arca compatible Q.R. clamp are great because they facilitate the use of a camera in the vertical position and are easy to hand hold while the plate is still mounted.
The drawback is that when you switch cameras, you often need to switch plates and they are expensive.

Wow those are cool! I just have a generic plate though so I'm good to go.
