A do outdoor photography, but a friend of mine wants some pics done against a black backdrop, I have a portable homemade backdrop stand and just some plain black sheets that I use with my kids, I would like to perhaps get something a little better in black and white, do you guys have any suggestions, im on a low budget .

Also suggestions for how to get the best out of a pic would be very much appreciated, I plan on going to their house and setting up the backdrop there, I dont know how much light I will have, all I have is my canon rebel with the 430 (on the way yay), how do I soften the light? and what mode would it be best to use with a family or a moving child, I usually keep my cam on AV when I shoot outside, and for indoor portraits if I have lots of light I keep it on manual.

Anyway thanks and sorry this is so long!

Interested to see what replies you get as I ponder about inexpensive backdrops as well but don't know where to start.

You didn't mention what size you were looking for, but here is a 6x9 for $25:

They also sell on ebay, so you can use the bing.com discount to save more money:

Backdropoutlet has a pretty large selection and quite a few sales.

Backdropalley has a set of 5X10's for about $45 each.

Check out Botero over at B&H. 5X7 collapsables for about $65 each also 8X16's.

Adorama has a nice selection of solids pretty cheap, branded as their own.

Photek has 4X5 uh-ohs for $35 each on their site for head shots.

Steve Kaiser has quite a few at decent prices.

Plus quite a few here buy some e-bay specials.

Dave.......

Sports Dude has it right it's skaeser, not Kaiser.

Just curious as to what you purchased, since I'm kinda leaning towards getting a backdrop myself.

When buying seamless is the train included (if I understand how they work) or is it so that all you need to do is order the seamless muslin for 25-45$?

seamless paper, rather than seamless muslin. The paper is nice to avoid the wrinkles all together.

Another thing you can do is to buy muslin fabric at your local fabric store and dye it black. If you have a Joann's Fabric, they constantly have coupons for 40% - 50% off one item. If you go this route, you can get a really large backdrop pretty cheap.
