When are signed releases needed/required?

I understand the model-photographer relationship, but outside of that, when are releases needed? Is it only when selling images? If so, a particular situation example: shooting at a school or church sporting event and then selling the images to parents - are releases required from all recognizable (sp) people in the image? Someone make it simple for me - if simple is possible on this subject.

Everytime you can possibly get one signed. There is never a good reason not to get a release signed so do it all the time. Helps you get into the habit of doing it, making it easier and easier to get them when you need them. And five years from now the oppurtunity to sell a photo may come and be available to you if you got a release signed.
