OK, let's say I have a nice woodsy scene shot on my DRebel in JPG/Fine. Because of all the detail (i.e. lots of leaves), the original is almost 6 MB in size.
When I crop it for a 4:3 aspect ratio, then downsize to 640x480 with PS CS or PSE, using Bicubic interpolation, I get jaggies on my diagonal lines (pretty noticeable). Of course, at this point, the image is a little soft (no sharpening yet). Doing any Unsharp Mask on the photo makes the jaggies more noticeable.
The final insult is trying to save the downsized JPG to keep it dial-up friendly, or at least partially so, aiming for the magic 100K filesize or less. With the pictures I was working with this evening, that meant saving with PS's 1 to 12 scale set on a lossy 3 value to end up with a 92K file.
Am I trying for too much here, to get smoother lines in such an image, or am I missing a little trick somewhere?
Here's a sample of my truck in the woods that nets out at 95.6k in size.
