Hi, just joined and thought I'd share some images taken
recently at the Grand Am race at Mont-Tremblant.
Great place for viewing/photographing race cars.

I confess to not having taken pictures in the pits, will have
to correct this next time.

Trying to get serious about panning...

I'm always trying to improve my images, so please
let me know what could be better.

You can have a look at the rest here (http://www.pbase.com/sosodriver/20050520_rolex)...

Thanks, Michel.

Looks like both cars are partially out of focus, possibly due to a narrow depth of field. Other than that they look good, nice spread on the site also.

Nice shots! You have some better ones on your site. ;-)

Thanks for the comments.

Skip, I know some of the car is out of focus and it's been bugging me,
but I just checked the EXIF and it's F13 for the first photo.
They were coming up to me pretty fast and I am not hitting them
perpendicular so I guess that might explain it, sort of a zoom effect?

What I'd like to understand also is, out of the keepers at this spot,
most have only the back in focus (front is blurred), but some,
like the first shot, have the front in focus (back blurred).
???

Hey PhotosGuy, these are all my babies now, always hard to pick the
best one!

Michel - great shots. This series will be at the local track here in september... now I am hoping the weather will be a little inclimate - love the rain shots. Salut!

What I'd like to understand also is, out of the keepers at this spot, most have only the back in focus (front is blurred), but some, like the first shot, have the front in focus (back blurred). That was common with focal-plane shutters & a slightly uneven pan speed when you don't keep following the car even after the shutter is tripped. Try this a few times & see if it helps:
Stand with your feet in a line parallel with the direction that the car is traveling. You want a line drawn perpendicular to your shoulders to intersect the point where you anticipate taking the pic. Turning at the waist, start your pan WAY early, snap the shot when it's in front of you, AND continue the pan WAY to the side. This insures that the pan is smooth & steady when you take the shot.

Croasdail, yeah, I was happy to get some rain because I knew that water
spray would look good, and that nice diffused light also.
One of my buddies was also happy because he wanted to see some
slippin' and slidin' on the track. ;)

Thanks Frank,
will definitely try next time.
