I found the following article (link to follow) after reading through a 580 EX flash technique thread on another forum. It is a few years old, written for the 550EX and before E-TTL II, but the basics are very informational. I believe it is a Canon authored article posted in a French Canon website. However, it is in English. To those trying to figure out the 580 and wireless flash, this will certainly help.

Unfortunately, the basics of ETTL are entirely different from the basics of ETTLII. You can't carry any principles over from 1 to 2. ETTLII is totally divorced from active AF points. You would be better served by reading about ETTL2 at www.photonotes.org
