I could have swore i saw a post where someone had to modify the umbrella shaft for their plm in order for it to be accomodated to the dlite strobes. i just wanted to double check to see if this was true.

No, none of the Elinchrom lights will accept an umbrella rod from a Paul Buff PLM.
What you can do though, is to use a short umbrella adapter for the strobe and mount the PLM to the adapter. Despite the fact that the strobe will be offset and not perfectly centered, I guarantee it's going to work well and you won't have a problem or and issues with it.

Robert,
care to post a link/point us in the direction of said "short umbrella adaptor?" Not sure if I'll give old man buff anymore of my money...but the PLM certainly seems to have a few uses.

Of course now that I'm looking for it I can't find it. The only one I'm finding right now is for a hot shoe flash. Considering the size of the PLM you might just be able to use a Bogen 026. I bet it works fine.

^ thanks Rob. luckily i have a short umbrella mount to do the trick. i just picked up a d-lite 4 and was wondering if my dremmel tool would have done the trick to widen the 7mm shaft to 8mm. then i looked at the image again and saw that the shaft runs THROUGH the flash head. @#%@#^. a part of me thinks that i should have just gone with an ab800 in order to keep the umbrella holding shaft from breaking on the short umbrella mount.
time to give PCB a call for the plm now that the light is coming

"We are now shipping the Parabolic Modifer System – PLM™
Concurrently, we are working with a new vendor to make certain improvements to PLM. These improvements include better workmanship, slight reshaping of the frame and fabric to optimize focusing even further, improved design of diffuser fabrics for better fit and more secure attachment, and changing and strengthening the shaft diameter to 7mm for decreased bending and for the ability to directly connect to certain European monolights that won’t hold the current 8mm shafts. We are also shortening the shafts so they don’t protrude as far behind the light units when in use. We are also replacing the current 42” size with a 48” version. Second generation PLMs are anticipated in Dec 2009. Availability of, particularly the 86” Silver PLM, may be limited between now and December due to extremely high demand.
Current PLMs are very well received by the industry and early adopters, and are rapidly creating an exciting new style of lighting for fashion and architectural as well as many other uses, often replacing softboxes and other modifiers have less efficiency and control.
We are delighted with the efficiency and lighting capabilities of the silver PLM. It is a fundamental departure from other, much more expensive “Giant Parabolics” and is, without question, the most efficient light modifier in existence. Many early users are now using Silver PLMs in sports use and in lighting large groups from substantial distances with low to modest power monolights."

will the PLM have big difference in terms of light quality than the octa + silver deflector without cloth?
i am just wondering
