My first post!:D Thanks to all for information already shared.
I just purchased a Kiss Digital N (= Rebel XT in Japan), and 2 lenses. (17-85IS and 75-200L4). I am new to SLR digital photography.... and raises the question as to what filter, if any, is best for each lens? I am buying a B&W 67mm polarizer, but what else does anyone recommend? (mostly just for protection).
Thanks
David

welcome to the forum!
there're two schools of thoughts on filters: 1) uv filter for protection, or 2) no filter for maximum image quality.
personally i use multi-coated UV filters on all my lenses most of the times. i do take off the filter if i'm shooting straight into a light source (like the sun) so chances of getting flares are minimized.
i'd recommend B+W MRC (multi-coated) UV filters. Hoya S-HMC is also a good choice (and slightly cheaper), but i find them harder to clean than the B+W.
hope this helps!

I agree with Alex re B+W and Hoya filters, I prefer B+W because they're easier to clean. I have a fancy Hoya filter for my Tamron, but I don't use it, for no good reason. I'm only going to use filters on expensive lenses, but I use hoods all the time for protection.

I only uses filters for effects not protection, so i mostly use polarizer and nd filters

I would look at a polarizer if you really want to get the skies and clouds to pop on landscape or arch. pictures.

I personally like Hoyas multi coated......I have a UV and CPL for my 70-200. They can get quite expensive though depending on what you want. My C-polarizer was $150 CDN.

so you have the single filter that does both or two filters(one for UV and one for POL)?

If you bother with a filter, get a good brand multicoated filter. I like B+W filters better than Hoya as I find them easier to clean. The only lens I use a filter on is my 70-200, I have one for the Tamron but I don't use it, for no good reason. I just don't like them much.
