Hello

I,am looking for a wide-angle lens to shoot motorcross.

There are especially 2 lenses I,am looked at.
Tokina 11-16 f/2,8 and Tokina 12-24 f/4

Are the AF fast enough?

Similar circumstances with a Tokina 19-35mm lens:

Focus worked well with the lens, even on a dreary overcast day.

At the distances you'd need to get a frame-filling image with an ultra-wide lens, your main concern is not going to be getting images in focus. Your worry is instead going to be making sure you don't get hit by moving objects. Maintaining a safe distance is one of the good reasons to use telephoto lenses for action shots.

An ultra-wide angle is a really special-purpose lens for motosports, IMHO. I'm still trying to figure out what works with my Canon EFS10-22.

At 22mm, you might as well be standing back further with a 70-200mm, at least if you subject is a single rider.

At 10mm, you get a very different perspective that is really exciting, but you are literally shoving a camera into the riders face with an out-streched arm. Many riders will not be comfortable with this, especially in a race situation.

I mostly play with the UWA during practices with riders who trust me, or use it for starting grid or pit photos.

I'd be curious to see more examples of how folks use UWA in motorsports. It's a tool that I'm still trying to figure out. I've seen some really interesting work from guys who knew their way around a fish-eye too and would love to see more.

At 10mm:

Thanks KurtW & DC Fan.

KurtW that,s kind of photos I like to take and it seems sharp enough. Do you know any specification of that photo like shutter and so?

I don't shoot motorcycles that much (mainly cars) and most of my motocross pics are with the 70-200, but here is an example from trial riding with the 10-22.

10mm (camera on the ground - front wheel was about 3 inches away at closest point)

10-22 is my second favourite lens for motorsports after the 70-200.

I'll second that... if you can get close to the action you will love the ultra wides. I have the Sigma 10-20 and love it (and the HSM it comes with)

And my favorite, was taken at 10mm ( I was 2-3 feet away from the rider)

Thatīs my opinion too. I love my Canon 10-22mm
On the 2009 Rally of Portugal Iīve only used two lens, the 70-200mm f/4 and the 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5.

Heres a few with a 10mm Canon fisheye, sell lots of these. Would go out on track without it. sorry about the water mark. This lense is surprisingly quick, never misses a focus

Very NIce Old Git but if I buy a 12-24, do I really miss the 2mm compared to 10-22?

I shouldn't think so.. sorry the lense I use is a sigma 10mm fish not canon.. told the canon was slower.

Have seen some shots taken with the f4 & look great, with the sigma at f2.8, this lense is plenty fast enough for motocross. Think the speed of the lense will be what it comes down to.

Thanks, I forgot to write "compared to 12-24" instead! ;)

I would think that either of the excellent UWA lenses such as the Canon 10-22mm or Tokina 11-16mm will meet your needs.
